huh?? I thought something that balances your battery pack, monitors voltage of each cell, cuts off charging and discharging when when a cell reaches a certain limit (and sounds an alarm when it does so) is basically the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Management_System"]definition of a BMS[/ame].

Do edumacate me though if that's wrong, I'm a newb esp. as it relates to lifepo4 and would love to learn more about it & BMS's et al.

    ok
so every connector to a cell on this battery balancer is a small charger/discharger for 3.2 volts litium cells.

mm wy dont we have these for Nimh battery's.. ( for a good price )

See as all it aims to do is maintain consistent battery voltages, it seems that it could be easily adapted to various NiMH cells if you can set the proper low/high voltage cutoffs.

prius Nimh batterys have a 7,2 vollts ( the 6, 1.2 volt cells are packed in 1 7.2 volt pack you can not take apart ! ) or 14,4 ( 2 in pair ) cell voltage.

the Litium are 3,2 volt cell where you can not make 7,2volt or 14,4 volts from

and what do these things cost?

ZOMG, this thread is very relevant to my interests! :D

Let's get a group buy going! They say it's only $1,500 each if we order 100 of them... ;)

(Or $1,200 each if we order 1,000 of them... though I'm not sure if that would be possible.)

oops...misunderstood. thought you were talking regular SOC...actually Li can safely go to 20% (provides good safety margin) and up to near 100%.

    Hi!

New member obviously...I've been lurking for a short time and joined specifically so I could post in this thread.

IF the initial testing for this thing turns out positive, I'd be VERY interested in getting one. Especially since I'm only about 15 miles from Troy MI.

Just bought a used 2004 Prius with ~48500 miles on it. Love it!!! Current tank is getting ~58 MPG on it.

OK, a little concerned about the above, esp. what I bolded.

Are you referring to the BMS for the Prius or the add-on system?

When you say the alarm didn't shut off until the system was charged, do you mean the OEM pack or the add-on pack? I would hate to get to work with that thing beeping and have it continue all day long until I got back home (no place to charge at work presently) to recharge. Or for that matter, going on a cross-country trip w/no place to recharge either.

Ordered my 4kw kit with an extra converter. Should arrive in 15-20 days and I will install it myself shortly thereafter. I have a 136 mile r/t commute so this will provide highway assist mostly. If the results are satisfactory I will upgrade to 6 or 8kw. Updates to follow.

4kw in the box, 2kw in place of the spare (possibly).

depends on how the voltage is setup

    if you have a 16 cell 2kwh pack = 16 cells in series ( i think is the input not 48 volts? dc-dc? ) and so that make's up for 52 volts ( 16 x 3,2v cells )

so with a 32 it not in series but in parallel ( lets hope someone can confirms this )

then you simple parallel a new pack.. but when its all in series.....then its a diferent story

Multiple 16 cell 2kwh packs can be connected in parallel.

Finally! I've actually ordered the kit!

So, It's arriving at my house on Saturday!!! I'll be removing my Plug-in Supply kit in the morning and possibly installing the new kit a few hours after that.. depending on when the thing arrives.

Sad part was, Jack wasn't able to send me the second string of batteries because they come from overseas. I purchased the 4kwh kit. The extra 2kwh batteries will be coming in sometime in 15-24 days.

Anyone want to buy a used(it's basically new :p) Plug-in supply kit?

If this works out well... I will definately be putting in another 2 or 4kwh into the system.

What is a Plug-in supply kit, and why are you swapping out?

    Guys,

Don't need group buy. We are offering $500 discount for limited number of pilot testers who provide 30 day trip log for product improvement and marketing purpose in first come first serve basis. We need your help to push the PHEV movement forward. We hope the automakers can put this kit in the new hybrids so that it would be qualified for $2500 federal tax credit. Then it becomes free for all of you.
