So there's no way to tell from the VIN which model we have? II, III, IV, or V??

My insurance company bases rates only on the VIN. They could not tell what the model and options were. So one pays the same rate regardless whether it is a II without options or a V with AT. They said in the event of a claim, I would have to show proof of what model and options I bought.

So what does it mean if I have a 0 (zero) instead of a 1 or a 5?

We saw 0(zero) at Detroit show in January on pre-production Prius.
Probably, it was made at Tsutsumi plant.

Thanks Ken! Same plant as our Camry then. Very good.

so we're up to 32,000 now. That's where my VIN stands. Not bad for a few months.

    Hi Tideland Prius,
Maybe, the "0" is not only the pre-production Prius.
The Tsutsumi Plant has two production lines for the 2010 Prius.
So, both "0" and "1" are made at Tsutsumi plant, I think now.

Reviving a second dead thread... (with the same information in another thread that I just updated).

I know this is a dead thread.... Looking to buy a Prius and trying to figure out which model it was... Anyway, found this and serveral other thread until I came across the Toyota site. :) Future reference, Toyota website, will decode your VIN and give you the Model of Prius (II, III, IV, V) ... at least as of this writing.

As I’ve written before, that site only has information about vehicles distributed by its operator, Toyota Motor North America, or its predecessor, Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.; even vehicles first sold in Hawaii and U.S. territories aren’t included, much less those sold in Europe, Japan, or elsewhere.
Information about your car, if it was originally built for sale in Europe, should be available from the Vehicle specifications page on toyota-tech.eu (free registration required).

For vehicles built for sale in Japan, see the Grade Information Search Service (page in Japanese); keep in mind that these are identified by frame number, not by VIN.
