2005 Pruis : Saving the customer some money by using a salvage yard a/c compressor is ok some times, it works most of the time. I finally got most shops to replace receiver dryer s or dryer socks and filter screen, It is a slow expensive learning curve for a shop owner or TECH who have been just replacing parts for many years not knowing or understanding why the part broke in the first place. For 18 years i'v been called into repair shops and body shop to recharge, find leaks, diagnose a problem, advice on procedures to be performed or parts to be replaced, how to explain to a customer or insurance company why other parts not directly related to the failed part need to be replace so the part will not fail again or have poor performance. it has not been easy and year after year it's the same situation with most every new shop I get called to. It cost the customer a lot of wasted money on unnecessary parts being replaced and lost time for both the shop owner, tech doing the repair and customer who keeps having to come back to redo the repair for warranty. In the end a lot of vary unhappy individuals, the customer is unhappy with the shop, the owner of the shop is unhappy whit his TECH, the TECH is unhappy with his boss or just the situation of not knowing what went wrong, it's like doing the job for free and then having to do it again for free of 1/2 price over and over. This is a never ending story I see decade after decade ever since I was a teenager working on cars with my father on his jobs and was explained to me by both my grandfather and father if I stay in the automotive trade I would be working for shop owner or manager who never worked on cars or cant work on cars or just replaced parts for 20 years so that automatically qualifies them as a owner of a repair shop or as a technician. There are a lot of vary good shops and shop owners out there , but that number has been sadly decreasing over the years. Back to this Pruis 2005, and over a thousand other cars I see just like this every year. You can see by the black and the metal flakes it a burnt a/c system and if you look at the sight glass it is dirty on the inside. Just a compressor and filter sock replaced, it will make the customer happy for now it will work many times, it's a gamble not repair work lets get that clear. What about all the tiny metal pieces and burnt oil still in the system ?. Unfortunately Toyota SCREWED UP big time by leaving the expansion valve under the dash that takes 7 hours to remover and replace and just what should be a $20 to $30 part and should be replaced every time there is a bad burnt up compressor, just as common as you put on your socks before you put on your shoes it's a no-brainier!. So now I'm called back out to the job to recharge the a/c in the next photos from this job you will see what I found. photo 1 of 4
