Looks like a failure of the Harmon extension box, mounted below and cabled to the head unit.
A 100w halogen lamp capsule could easily melt the lamp holder base if not also the wiring, especially if corrosion was present.

To each his or her own; I used them on my 2012 Prius v to power lower LED reflector tail/brake lamps.
FWIW, I drive the v Five LED fogs as DRLs.

No peeling on the late 2011 build 2012 Magnetic/Winter Grey Metallic, but the top surface of the top rear spoiler has dulled over time.
