I want to put in a good word for the backup beep!

I know everybody hates that beep, but I'm one of those increasingly rare people who's other car is a manual shift (a '95 Tacoma). First gear is "up" on the shift, just like reverse in the Prius. When I want to start going forward, I shift up without thinking. If not for that backup beep, I would have run over somebody's grandma by now!

I brought this up before in an unrelated thread and was directed to SEVERAL threads, some over five years old, from folks who also think the electronic shifter is bass-ackwards.

REVERSE SHOULD BE DOWN!!! There I said it. I feel better.

:focus: I have purposely avoided completing my new customer satisfaction survey (despite the incessant calls and emails) until I can get that dang blasted beeping canceled.

Took mine to the dealer and they did it for me with the Toyota Scan Tool.

Went to Toyota yesterday and he told me to pull it right in. Hooked up the laptop and now I only get one beep. They did it for free and included a smile.

I know that the sequence HAS to be P R N D, so if R was down, the P button would have to be below the shifter.

No. I think it is so the driver does not forget he or she is in FORWARD when trying to back-up. That's pretty important if you are parked in the garage, it's morning, and you're half asleep. It is so easy to put the car in gear, I appreciate the beeping to remind me I have the car in reverse.

Took mine to dealer I bought it from ... Asked the sales rep to set the reverse beep to single beep. ... He took it in back (I think he may have even done it himself) was done in no time ... No charge. Must be a dealer thing:confused:

The car should have a circle of buttons in the center of the steering wheel, like a '58 Edsel. That'd solve the problem.

So just to make sure I understand correctly: There are two ways to turn off the reverse beep:

Have the dealer do it for $0 - $93, or use the Scanguage. No other way?

For the Gen III, yes. You could DIY on the older models.

You could buy a $30 ELM clone off eBay. Plug it into a laptop and run a terminal emulator program. Then issue the command that is documented for the ScanGauge. It's certainly not user friendly, but it is cheap.

Ah... advancement! :sigh: Yes, this was the first thing I did and documented for my 2006. My dad just showed up with his 2010, and I figured no problem! I'll fix that for you... and couldn't. :(

I think I'd rather buy the ScanGauge... but my dad says his service guys will do it for free, so I think I'll go that route!

    Thanks for the help.

Maybe someone could discover where the beepin buzzer is located and disconnect it.... Or possible a fuse that operates the reverse and the seat belt buzzer...

Anyone else have tips for stubborn dealers? Mine (A1 Toyota in New Haven, CT) refused several times, and I'm getting very frustrated. I like the dealership besides that, but its aggravating.

Are there instructions somewhere for how to do this with the ScanGauge II?

SEARCH function is your friend now. There is an XGauge code you enter in the SG and it will do both things, plus can switch it back on if you want.

Someone has posted all of the XGauge codes for SG II somewhere here on PC. It is VERY EASY, and then you have all the other functions and benefits of the SG. I don't know why people keep beating their heads against the wall with dealing with recalcitrant dealers when this such a no brainer - don't need a svc appt, wait time etc etc. @ $145 on Amazon

    Here are XGauge codes:

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiHL0r_2nhUEdF9lVVBxOVNoN3Zva3E0NmdZTUR1eVE&hl=en#gid=5

It is from #38 of this thread:

Scangauge's are $159.99 on Amazon these days. I wish they were $145.
