You're gonna have to shop around locally. Programming the car to accept a used smart key is not straight forward -- $200 for such a job sounds about right actually. If you can find someone in LV, such as an auto locksmith, who does it for less, please post your experience.

They handed me the keys( fobs ) to Rufas my blue 2011 prius and said if you lose one $500 at this stealership for a replacement. Say What $$$$$ Welcome to the party pal.

 

Absolutely right about the $500 replacement cost. It seems like a rip, but I bought the Smart Key insurance at the time of sale for $95. I believe it's good for 5 years for any kind of loss and it also includes free battery replacement (at the dealer).

 

FYI, it should not cost more than $350 to add a new smart key, as MSRP is $250, and programming is much less than 1 hour of labor. $500 is a ripoff, even for a dealer.

 

Dusty , there are a few morons like this on the group but for most part most of the group can help you more than any dealer out there, they have been there and done it.

 

I believe the smart key transmitter is nearly 200 and the metal key insert has to be laser cut, which costs about $100. Programming is an extra $100 on top of that. So $400 isn't out of line for a dealer. If you're paying less than that, then you must not be getting the metal key insert?

 

I have never heard of the "Smart Key Insurance". Is it offered by Toyota, or just your dealer? Sounds like it may be a good idea.

Pop-a-lock in Riverside, CA [(951) 992-1096] reprogrammed 4 used smart keys for our Gen 3 Prii (2 cars). I got the used smartkeys on eBay for about $40.00 each. Programming for the first smartkey was $70 and $40 each forvthevremainder. Our local Toyota dealers wanted more than $400 each, so persistence paid-off. Check the phone book and see if there is an auto locksmith in your area with the Advanced Diagnostics hardware and the know how. It took about a dozen phone calls for me and finally worked. Persistence is your friend.

 

Was the $100 deductible the standard deductible you carry on the "comprehensive" portion of you regular regular car insurance (mine is $500) or was there a special rider for the SmartKey? If it is special, stand-alone insurance, where did you get it.

Lost one of my Prius 2011 key fobs. The dealer quoted $425 to replace ($330 just to buy the key fob). After searching on line, I bought the new uncut Prius 2010-2011 smart key from ​

eBay​

(seller: remoteoverstock) for $160 with free shipping. Good service and the key is uncut and unprogrammed. (this is important because the dealer in my area won't program the key unless the key fob is "brand new" and the key is uncut). The dealer charged $45 if I just want to add the new key. The lost one will still work on the car if it ever presents itself. it costs $65 to reprogram all the keys. In this case, the lost one won't work anymore. For security, I chose to reprogram. To physically cut the key, it costs $25 additional. Apprarently it's not an easy cut that any hardware store can do. So about $250 later, I got the replacement.​
