I would love for someone "in the know" to put together a "How to minimize fuel consumption in cold weather" video. :)

    I just have a question for y'all.

At highway speeds, when you are above the speed where the ICE must spin to protect MG1 from overspinning, is there still a good reason to go into regen briefly before going into Glide?

I understand in regular stealth mode that you want the ICE to stop, so you engage a little bit of regen to force the ICE to stop.

My thought is, in warp stealth, the ICE has to spin regardless, so by simply easing into glide without ever going into regen first, the HSD would simply cut fuel to the ICE. Right?

I don't have a scanguage so if someone can confirm the above that would be great. Also what is the speed at which the ICE must spin regardless?

Wow, this was great. I figured out a lot of this in the past week of driving...having attained a 54 mpg on a trip from VA to NY...

I love this car so much!!! Just got my 2011 Four with solar package lat Saturday! Replaced my sweet Infiniti FX, but nothing is sweeter than getting triple the miles and paying a third for the gas...let alone the cheaper car note!

Correct, no need to use regen if you don't have to. Of course, it's so slight, but it will slow you down a little at a time when you're trying to maintain momentum. The Gen III I believe you can just let up gradually but not fully on the accelerator as you say, which is different than Gen II which requires a full, quick release of pedal before redepression.

Note what Wayne says here about warp stealth in the Gen III, that there are a couple warp stealth states, one of which consumes fuel. Scroll down to the small Warp Stealth section a little ways down.

Also in Gen III, ICE will run at and above 46 mph.

Hi Bob and thanks for the video. I'm from Canada and just purchased my first Prius - it's a used 2010 base model with 19000 km. I'm interested in seeing what mpg I can achieve and your video certainly helps. Some of the techniques, I have already been using, such as P&G, but my gas mileage seems to be around the 44 mpg mark. The weather this time of the year is around the freezing point so i'm hoping that that is the reason for the low mileage. I have 35 lbs in the tires, which I think is enough.

    Thanks again.
    Dennis :)

I went to 40 LBS in the tires and the mileage went up; my last tank of gas was 59.3 MPG. In the winter, here in Georgia, I was between 50 -52 MPG, but the car was also brand new and now I just passed 5000 miles.

It depends on how far you want to push it and what mpg you have been getting on that tank. If you drive till the low fuel light comes on then a Genii can go about 500 miles at 55 mpg. The geniii can't go a bit further due to the lack of a bladder fuel tank. I would say between 500 and 600 miles for most drivers assuming a 50mpg-55mpg average and a usable tank size of 10.5 gallons and not pushing it too far on empty. Those 70mpg freaks can get 700 or more on a tank.

My highest was 531 miles at 55mpg.

A hard question to answer (how often to fill up) without specifics. Generally speaking, F8L is in the ballpark. I think for most people, 450 +/- 50 miles would be a very conservative bet. If you go to Fuelly | Share and Compare Your MPG, you'll see a spread of average MPG reported. Pick a number (47 mpg is a popular number for a 2010). Multiply it by 10 gallons and you'll get a very safe/usable range in most circumstances (very cold winters, very short trips.....are exceptions).

I typically fill up at 600 miles during the Summer/Fall months when I get my best MPGs. In winter, it drops to 500 miles, due to the combination of winterblend gasoline, colder temperatures, and rain.

I just had my best tank (66+ MPG) and drove nearly 690 miles on it (put in 10.25 gallons, still had over 1.5 gallons in reserve).

Thanks, Cody. BTW, I included you in the 70mpg freak category. :)

THank you! As a new Gen III owner. This was very informative to me as I recall the 09's needing a lot of attention to the "sweet spot" on the pedal for coasting- the 11's not so much.

Thank you again for the video!

I am a new gen3 owner (3 weeks as of this post.) I was having fun trying to get the 5min times up over 50mpg. I finally got a few to 55 and was quite pleased. After watching this video at work, my drive home saw two 75's and a 60. The best part, I was driving with the flow of traffic and not impeding it or irritating those around me. This was an extremely informative video and the techniques can be implemented instantly.

Thanks, Bob, for the video. Very informative and interesting to this first-time Prius owner.
