You know you have it bad when you decide you can drive 25mph in a 40mph zone just to make it home.

 

Haha. And I feel bad for driving 61mph in a 65mph zone (while in EV range)...

Hi. I'm curious about how to get my 'gauge' to appear as red in the upper ICE zone...mine is just a pale green-gray. Is there a setting for this?

 

Maybe you are looking at the Hybrid System Indicator, which is green-gray instead of the EV Driving Ratio, which is what the photo is showing.

 

176 miles today, using 9 miles of EV capacity, maximum speed 60 mph, temperature 50°F.

With the greatest of ease, the result was 61 MPG.

Gotta like that.

 

Just checked the display for end-of-day stats. Turns out it was actually 62 MPG.

That's great for a road trip, but driving 550 miles of highway travel (2/3 with bikes on back) recently sure will make the lifetime average misleading. Oh well, that is what real-world data is all about.

Well, my PHV certainly is broken in now.

Today's road trip was 194 miles. There was a steady and sometimes heavy rain the entire time. The temperature was 43°F, requiring both defrost & heat to continuously run. Two bikes were strapped into a rack on back, creating quite a bit of drag cutting through the water. There was no opportunity to plug in. And the interior was stuffed with cargo (including a 3-wheel recumbent).

That made for very ugly Spring travel conditions.

I wasn't exactly thrilled by the thought of what the outcome would be. Although this drive is really going to bring down lifetime average, it does provide real-world data in far from an ideal situation. Fortunately, even when Prius is challenged, it still shines.

The result display was 39 MPG. What else could accomplish the same feat, especially without plugging in?

 

This is where gasoline is superior than battery -- energy density.

 

OMG! It never occurred to me to try and put my 'bent in the back of my PiP! Which one do you have? I have an ICE Adventure FS, and it can fold, but it's kind of a pain in the nice person to fold it and then unfold and re-attach the tires. All three of my tires are 20". Tell me about your 'bent and how you squeeze it in!

John, I've had your homepage John's Stuff - Toyota Prius and more bookmarked for a long time. Are you planning to do any evaluations of the different modes in PHEV land? I'm thinking about the EV, HV, ECO, PWR modes and how they each affect mileage and performance.
And maybe more importantly, how these modes can be used in conjunction with each other to enhance mileage or performance.

I know the data points for the PHEV are still at the "slim or none" stage right now, but eventually there will be more. You've done a great service of observing and collecting data on the various Prius you've owned. Thanks again!

Also forgot to add.. I disconnected my battery today. After reconnecting it, a full EV charge displayed 13.4, same as when my car was brand new (actually, I think my first full charge showed 13.3, cant totally remember now). Prior to disconnecting my battery, a full charge was showing 12.4 (which was a slow and steady climb up from a low of 11.2 or so, from a few weeks ago)

 

Interesting, did you lose any other settings besides the EV charge?

 

Everything in the radio was still there (presets, saved destinations, bluetooth pairings, etc). The monthly MPG total on the MFD was still there as well.

The only thing I "lost" was all my trip odometer and EV driving data, my charge timer times (defaulted all back to 12AM) and the MFD date (defaulted to 1/1/2011).

Thats all I can think of/checked.

 

Well, the wait is over and I finally broke down and refueled for the first time in 4 weeks.

I've entered this data on the Google spreadsheet, but the EV/HV driving ratio and EV/HV miles, kwh, gallons used, are all lifetime.

crewdog, your HV miles displayed 1346?? is that a typo? should it have been 346?
