PIP charge timer memory setting

I had previously replied to this and said:

Well, last night I did the same thing, and came out to a car with no EV miles on it and a big ol' "Charging Interrupted" message on the MID this morning. Hubris, it'll get you every time.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact sequence of events. I think it might have had something to do with me plugging in the car end first, then the EVSE into the wall socket, and then setting the timer.

I may have to do some experimentation this weekend...

 

I have been hitting the "timer" button before shutting off the car, then connect the EVSE, has worked every night this week correctly.

 

Same process that I use EXCEPT I wait a second to hear the L2 charger click on and then wait another second to hear the L2 charger click off as soon as it 'realizes' it's on a timer.

Is this feature/app available with the base model?

 

Nope. Charging app depends on the built-in SafetyConnect cell phone that is only in the Advanced.

 

My Prius plugin will no longer charge up to 12.9 it now charges to 11.3, is this normal?

Yes. The EV Miles value updates based on past driving history and the estimate will also drop when the fan is on.

 

Mine seems much more simple. I have my timer set to turn on at 5:00 AM. When I want to charge the car I do the following:
1. Open the driver door and reach in and press the timer button. It displays the timer start time: 5:00 AM
2. Close the drivers door, walk around and plug in the cable.

Works every time, very simple.

 

I totally agree on that.

Not only should there be more than one timer start/stop setting, but I would prefer that you have to press when you do NOT want to use the timer settings.

The worst offense, in my opinion, is that the charger port is on the back left of the car, which is as far as it can physically be from the driver. In my garage I now have to walk around to the back side, unplug the cable, then get in; in 2 weeks I've already forgotten 2 or 3 times, which means exiting the car and unplugging the cable.

They should've left the charge port near the driver's door as it was on the prototype.

 

I feel your (and most owners') pain and you're quite correct.

If it makes you feel any better (and I'm sure it doesn't), my charge port parks about two feet from a dedicated 15 amp outlet that I put in four years ago, as an afterthought, next to the inverter for the solar system that was being installed.

I am 6 years late to this chat : but did anyone recently tried using a smart switch? Something like a WeMo switch? It supports 15 Amps, 120V

I briefly tried a "smart plug" and have two concerns. First, the car charger's amperage/wattage is very close to the smart plug's rated maximum. I could live with that, but my other concern is that the power should always be connected and disconnected from the charging port on the car. Using a smart plug would be like yanking the plug from the wall outlet or jamming it in while the car is connected. Either way would usually create a visible spark at the outlet and a surge passing into the car. With the smart outlet you won't actually see the spark, but the surge is still there.

 

No, that would not be the case.

Let me explain my plan

1. Connect 12 gauge extension cord to the smart plug.
2. Plug in the PiP charger in the smart plug - and don't fiddle with that setup again - since home garage is the only place I charge my PiP
3. Since Smart plug controls the flow of energy - and is controlled over wifi : On/Off/Scheduling happens without touching anything.
4. For anytime I need a charge
   1. I drive in the garage
   2. Unhang the PiP charger from wall mount & plug in the PiP
   3. Let the Smart plug do it's scheduling
5. For anytime I need to use the car
   1. Walk in the garage
   2. Unplug the charger and hang it back on the wall mount
   3. Drive away

Strictly speaking, Toyota wants power going to the charger before you plug into the car. They want the car unplugged when the charger powers up. I would just remove the smart plug from your plan and use the plug for something else. If your electric company offers a discount during overnight hours you may decide to deal with the inconvenience of returning to the garage to plug-in. Otherwise, just enjoy your Prius and drive safely.
