I would call Alamo Toyota or North Park. I have my doubts about Universal. Then I would consider finding a used part and have someone put it in. This one 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS Compressor | eBay is $500 with only 4000 miles on the car.

You could check with this shop on San Pedro. Toyota Prius repairs | San Antonio, Texas

Finally you could pickup this local ebay seller's Prius Repair Manual software and determine how big a job it really is. I am sure lots of mechanics could do the job with good instructions. TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 2011 SERVICE & REPAIR MANUAL SOFTWARE | eBay

Let me know what you find out.

Regardless of who does the job, be sure they use the special Toyota lubricant (that doesn't conduct electricity in the electric compressor) when re-charging the system with the refrigerant.

Was the AC serviced recently? Just seems odd it would die after only a year or so.

I agree about the premature failure, but that's a lot of miles for a one year old car & I assume Texas has year round temperatures that pretty much require full time use of the A/C system.

$3000, sounds about right, here in San Francisco. it is too soon for a compressor burn out, was this car in a front end hit and a body shop replaced or removed the a/c condenser to do body work. This is were I get most of my pruis compressor burn outs from. Body shops make A/C tech a lot of money from their mess ups.

After a burn out if there is metal in there system, you replace the condenser, the expansion valve ( 7 hours labor to remove the dash to get to the expansion valve), Flush out all the lines and hoses, replace or flush out the evaporator depending if you find metal in the EVAP.

If you buy a used compressor only use the ND-11 oil about $200 for a 8oz can.

? Was the A/C slowly over time getting warmer( not working so well ) . ??

Look at the photos on my page of burnout compressors and metal in the condenser. I show a photo of the filter and dryer sock removed from the condenser. WARRING DO NOT!!!!! BUY A CHEAP NON-OE CONDENSER WITH LESS COOLING TUBE AND LESS COOLING FINS!!!!!!!......

Some times around here the Toyota dealer just replaces the compressor after a burn out, it will some times work long enough to get the customer out of warranty$$$$$$$ then when you come back they get to charge you the big bucks$$$$$$$$$.....
