Battery Cool-Down Before Charging

    After driving the PiP, how long should one wait before recharging it?

    And why isn't there a delay option in the charge timer?

    Sometimes I put the timer on, let it sit a while, and then use the Entune app to start charging. But don't know how long a wait is long enough.

    i suppose you shouldn't charge warm batteries, but id i have somewhere to go, i just throw it back on charge. granted, it doesn't happen on a regular basis.

    Car won't charge if batteries are in an environmental condition outside of the parameters...so plug in as normal and let the car decide.

    If you're worried about battery life, the best charging strategy is to have the car just finish charging right before you go and drive it. Of course, making this happen in real life is easier said than done if you want to charge more than once a day.

    the only concern I have and avoid is letting the car, fully charged, sit in the sun.

    I don't think it's as big of worry in the PiP as it would be in the Leaf since the PiP doesn't let you charge to 100%.

    The Leaf doesn't either. Although it does let you charge to 93% I believe, which I still think that is too much.
    Glad to hear the PiP won't let charging start while temps are too high. I was very surprised the Leaf doesn't have a sensor set up to prevent charging while too warm. It is a pretty basic bit of software/hardware I would think.

    The "cold soak" helps with longevity. Batteries like to rest, rather than being recharged immediately after having just been depleted. It's not necessary. But if there's the opportunity, take advantage of it with the timer or Entune.

    Not that I don't believe you, but where did you read that? I've always read it goes to 100%.

    "Resting" only helps lithium batteries in that it potentially allows them to cool off and allows them to spend more time at a lower SOC - both of which reduce inevitable capacity degradation.
    What Nissan calls "100%" is only about 93-94% full. Nissan lets you use almost 90% of total capacity of the pack - a bit more than 21 kWh out of 24 kWh when the pack is new. Of course, they recommend that you use the "80%" "long-life" charge mode, don't leave the car sitting at "100%" for long periods of time, and don't constantly top off the battery back to "100%".

    Allowing the end-user to charge to a true 100% SOC would today's common lithium chemistries would quickly result in capacity degradation leaving usable capacity than by limiting max SOC to something lower.
