I'm not sure what "Canbus adapter" is in your list.

Yes, small monitor and keyboard will be required. I suggest a 7" VGA monitor designed to run off of 12V. ~ $150 on ebay. And I just ordered a compact PS/2 keyboard from Amazon ($35).

Yes to the touchscreen. No to the can adapter (your mega will take the place of the can adapter)

Any software updates or project updates? I was surfing before work and found a site where someone was selling a CAN board for this conversion (actually for parallel stock hybrid battery packs). I was busy and didn't bookmark it, so of course it's lost now. But if anyone knows what i'm talking about, I'd like to mark it.

I found it... Unlike what we are considering, this uses additional OEM Panasonic packs. But it's interesting none the less.

    Enjoy!

What is top balance and bottom balance and some say you do no need to balance at all

Top balancing is done during charging at the end of the charging process. Excess power is burned on cells that are higher volts than others until they are all about equal at the top. This is used by miniBMS and Pacific EV.

Bottom balancing is done when cells are around 30% SoC and have rested for a while before starting. The balancer takes power from the whole battery pack and feeds it to the lowest cell/s volts until they are all about equal. This is used by Enginer. Last time I checked you have to open the BMS16D to switch on the balancing - PIA.

There is a group of people who do not use a balancer and will balance the pack by connecting all the cells in parallel and let them equalize to the same voltage over 24 hours. They do this every so often.
