Yes, and the carpool incentive too.
I'm not carpool lane "insensitive" unless I am hurrying!!

The Advanced costs 25% more compared to the Base. If you compare them a different way, the Base costs 20% less.

They were probably both overpriced at launch, but a market correction is taking care of that right now. Too bad Toyota doesn't throw the early adopters a bone (a la Apple and their first iPhone).

I was just trying to point out to the original poster that his assessment is sort of slamming the PHEV (PiP) and in reality, these differences are not a PiP cheapening issue. I had a 2005 base model, a 2007 package 9 (at the time, everything in it), a 2011 Package IV with sunroof, etc.... and now a 2012 PiP base that I added leather and a Homelink EC mirror to.

Over the years, the cars just keep getting better and better for fuel economy and comfort.
The more little things they add, the heavier the car. The heavier the car, the lower the fuel economy - it's that simple.
If losing some incidental items or changing the suspension makes MY car a better car for me with economy and handling, you'll get no argument from me.

Do I wish my car has the little pull-out coin tray in the dash or a pop-out drink holder like other cars do? A power seat? Even a sunroof? Bigger gas tank? That long, flat storage area under the rear decklid? A different place for the plug to be stored so I can actually use a cargo net w/o being aggravated? Sure. I do. But, my car has what it has.. and I knew it when I bought it. I'd have kept the 2011 sunroof car if the PiP hadn't come out. For me, the HOV stickers are really 95% of the reason I am in my little green machine. If not for the green stickers, I might even be in a TCh or a new tech package/sunroof IV. Maybe even a v wagon! :)

It's totally cool to rant a little about what you wish your car had, but I think we just hate to see our cars "slammed" or being accused of the corners being cut.

The Gen II was a great car in its time.. and this Gen III is an amazing car for the money.

    So true!
Thank about what this car DOES have o/p. It has a lithium ion battery and you can run on electric only for many miles without using a drop of gas. How cool is that!?! You wont get that with ANY other prius unless you buy a plug in kit from Engineer. I for one dont want a car I need to hack and modify to make it run in EV only.

I cant agree 100%. For example, why the bumper guard, coin tray and cargo net hook came with the regular prius and not the PIP.

I am not putting the PIP down dont get me wrong. My point is that Toyota did cut corners and try to save money on parts that people like you guys dont care or will never notice.

I think they are smart and know how to make money.

Elwood: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?
[a brief thinking pause while Jake attempts to light a cigarette]
    Jake: Fix the cigarette lighter.

I would have bought this car if it had burlap seats and was painted primer gray. (Heck, I’d pay extra for primer gray.) It makes me grin.

why did you do that? - for the carpool sticker - priceless ... obviously everybody on the board and forum loves these cars so there is an automatic bias ... especially from the one that sells them, but after getting rid of an 07 camry hybrid that I paid 30k for ... THIS PIP is way over priced for what you get ... just my opinion. CARPOOL changes it because I can't put a value on being in beautiful sunny huntington beach an extra hour per day VS hell LA ... So that's priceless. The car is neat but needs a lot of refinement before they get it right - hence entune debaulkle, spare, declining ev charge, crashing re-sale value - list goes on and on

With the exception of the coin-tray missing, everything else you originally complained about either never existed on any Prius model, or was always an option for the car that the port or dealer installed. It sounds like you bought a floor model the last time and never bothered to look at which options were standard versus which ones the port or dealer put on car (like bumper guards or cargo net hooks).

As to the lack of the coin holder tray in the center console, yes it seems rather cheap that they got rid of it. However, there are design decisions that we are not privy to that influence what a car has or doesn't has. They could have decided to remove it because they got a lot of complaints about how flimsy it was; or how if you needed to get at anything below the tray, you ended up spilling everything, or a market study they conducted found that it was a feature that didn't matter to anybody.

People are so over reactive here when you say any negative things about the prius.

Weather you like it or not, the coin tray, bumper guard, and cargo net hook did once came with the 2010 prius III and not an OPTION.

Per http://www.toyotacertified.com/ebrochures/10_prius.pdf, the bumper applique is $69 on the 2010. I have no applique on my 06.

I can't speak to the hooks, but from Where can i purchase - Cargo Net Hooks? | PriusChat, it doesn't look like they were standard.

Personally, I could care less about the carpool stickers... it's just a way-cool car that I've been waiting years for now. I got the stickers just because I could, but so far haven't used 'em. But I'd buy a PiP in a heartbeat if I didn't have one already!

Placing 2 drivetrains in a Prius is highly expensive, especially in a Plugin. The battery pack is a huge percentage of the cost of the car.
They attempt to cut weight and cut cost where they can to make up for this and keep the car competitively priced. So what? Want the items you mentioned that were missing from previous Prius'? Go to Toyota stealership and purchase them for your car. -All except the independent suspension that is....
