I started a thread in the Prius C section, but there does not seem to be nearly the traffic is that section of the forum as here so I am reasking the question. Also, at this point I am rather convinced I want a scangauge if for nothing else then for monitoring coolant temps for grill blocking this winter (I live in Upstate NY). Still leaning in the direction of the E, but want to be sure there isnt something about the II that I didnt realize I would miss.

    Thanks.

Can you get everything in torque that you can on the Scanguage. I have a spare android phone I could probably mount somewhere.

I have the Garmin with Bluetooth adpater and hate it. Torque is far better.

I did notice my clock running slower. That is odd.

So after some research, it seems like there are a number of options for smartphones (Torque, Dash Command, GoPoint, Nova Gauge, to name a few) that have very nice modern interfaces. These are way more attractive gauges compared to that of Scangauge (which is very dated as Judgeless mentioned). And with the display the Prius C has, I feel the scangauge is sub par. However, It seems that note of the smartphone apps have the Xgauge or equivalent capabilities. Also, it seems the Gen. III codes work for the C. Those extra gauges might be worth the crappy interface.

Anyone know if there is a smartphone app that has these extra gauge capabilities?

A big difference between the e and II is the e has only one place to plug in the cord. That increases the depth of the of the device by almost an inch. Consider where you will mount the scan gauge.

that's an interesting point. I think I am going to look for a windshield mount and place it on the part of the door window that is fixed. Regardless, I am definitely going with the II, unless I discover there is a better interface with xgauge capabilities, be it in an app or something else. Looks like I might have to settle for the crappy interface of the scangauge for now. I'm sure eventually someone will develop a better interface with the Xgauge functions.

You can also daisy chain some II's to get more than 4 readouts.

The Torque app I mentioned in post 4 does everything the Scangauge does. It fully supports every aspect the Prius. All the Xgauge items for the Scangauge are in Torque.

You can daisy chain Scangauge units for more displays or you can use Torque and fit 100X the gauges on one screen. Then you can start a new screen with even more gauges. You can just scroll left or right to look at the screens with more gauges.

The Scangauge is an out dated device that is way over priced for what it does.

Here are some basic funtions on one screen

Here another screen that I can scroll to that has things like Prius's (MG1/MG2) Motor Generator 1& 2 speed and tempature as well as the (ICE) Internal combustible Engine speed and temp.

I'm staying with the ScanGauge II. The Gen III's already have too much information available for really safe driving. Watching the boost or the inverter temp does not give me much useful information. In addition, unless you use a pad or laptop, the screen is hopelessly small...where do you mount a laptop for safe viewing? The three readings I have found useful over the last 80,000 miles in both Gen II and III are battery amps, throttle position and segment mileage. The Gen III's HSI has an equivalent to TPS, so you have two gauges to play with. I mount my gauge on the steering column behind the wheel which makes it reasonably easy to see.

You have lots of options with Android phones. There are 2.8", 3.0", a bunch between 3 and 4 inch, 4.5", 4.8", 5.0", 5.3", 5.5" displays. The tablets start at 7" to 12" displays. There are thousands of car mounts for them. If anything you are very limited on options with the Scangauge.

Well. Glad I didn't order the scan gauge. Now I wonder if any of the iPhone apps have these options. I've read that Dash Command has everything Torque has, just cost 10x as much.

What OBD cable do you use. From what I have read some may not report all the extra "Xgauge" information. Do you know anything about this? Or have I mis read anything?

I'd like to get the GoPoint it seems to be the cheapest at $70 bluetooth, $60 wired for the iphone. Their Android and iphone bluetooth version is $130 if I had to get an Andriod.

Judgeless, Thanks for all your info thus far. Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I dont end up buying something and then have to buy another device for the features I want.

Xgauge is nothing special. It is a PID with all the math to get the right reading. It does not have any effect on the OBD adapter.

Some OBD adapters have timing issues. There is a cheap version for Android called Oak. People have complained about it randomly disconnecting. I spent a little more and got this adapter.

Okay, I think I'm getting to the last of my questions. The Android market is unfamiliar to me, could you recommend a phone to look for in the 5in range, or a 7in (or smaller) tablet. From my searching there seems to be so many options I dont want to buy something that is too dated.

    Thanks for all your help!
