Should I still buy Prius plug-in knowing that I can charge it only once in a while?

What would that "case" be? I didn't see a post from the OP describing his "case", or daily driving routine.

I don't charge at home very often, I use the public charging infrastructure, rather extensively. I used 2 gallons of gasoline for my last 3000 miles of driving. The larger battery is a big enabler for higher EV utilization, and lower carbon emissions, as seawolf is quick to point out. If the OP is doing a 300 mile trip between charges, the PiP is probably the more optimal solution, if he is doing 100, the Volt might be, and if 40 then maybe the C-Max, and 13 maybe the PiP again.

 

well, it is downside from all points, really. health-wise, this means i'm walking less. emissions-wise, unfortunately my power is nowhere near carbon-neutral, so i'm polluting more than before in that sense.

a) not really (PG&E has some sort of carbon offset program but it's been widely criticized as being more hype than real) and b) i'm charging from my apartment building's laundry room, so i have zero influence on where that power comes from

 

actually, looks like they cancelled the carbon offset program. this is what's on the table right now: PG&E's Proposed Green Option, but that won't become available until a year from now at the earliest

inexpensive way to shed the guilt, maybe not the pounds though.

you need to get seawolf to calculate your carbon emissions though, TerraPass doesn't figure in EV miles for PHEVs.

 

Now you can go to maryland and buy a plug in for less than a regular prius. $3500 discounted by Toyota. $1500 discount at Darcars Toyota in Frederick , maryland. $2500 tax credit from federal gov. That is $32000 - $7500 or $24500. And zero % financing if you qualify for 60 months, from toyota credit. Sounds too good to be true, but it is true. BTW the plug in gets about 60mpg even when not being plugged in, which is better than regular Prius. You can buy the car in any state you want and still register it where you live. I live in Pa and had to buy mine in Md.

 

When I picked up my PIP in NY and drove to MI. I got 52MPG

OK you took the federal discount so you are correct! actually $24K after Fed credit seems possible.
