But the thing is, if you do this daily, those batteries won't last very long. And they are going to be pretty damn heavy, so I hope whoever's carrying them doesn't develop any back injuries.
I'm just not seeing the economics/practicality side of the equation working out.

...IIRC there was another post not too long ago maybe Aug/Sept someone was setting up on a rolling dolly a charging battery to charge from.

Not so great. The power went out again, during the storm, so I'm back on Prius power.

My apologies if you posted this somewhere else before, but can you please post again what you are powering with your inverter? Thanks, and good luck!

  6. These storms are always to be expected in your area, but you have solved a major problem, now maybe you stay home and catch up on reading, sleeping, etc. For every negative there is a equal or greater positive.

First, lets get the units correct shall we? Please.

Second, lets not conflate charge rate from a 110V 15 amp house circuit, with charge rate from the gasoline engine. The former is limited by the house not the car. How else would 240V chargers decrease charging time?

Third, the limitation of charge rate for the car, whatever it is, isn't helpful if the charge rate for the 12v Acc battery isn't up to it (and one is connecting one's inverter to the acc). However, normal car battery charger are generally 4-12 Amps, from this we can assume that normal 12V batteries won't have trouble with a 1500W charge rate.

Fourth, the engine is capable of putting out 60kW at max power. At idle, it might be what 10kW? We know that the traction batteries are capable of discharging at 27kW, The engine charge rate is probably somewhere between those two values. But that is to the traction battery.

Fifth, the real limitation on a Acc battery connected inverters, is the power rate that that battery can sustain. Evidence seems to put that somewhere in the 1kW to 1.5kw range. If one wants more than that, a traction battery inverter is probably required.

Arg! What does "over 10,000 Watts from regeneration, cumulatively, over several days." mean?!

Watts is a unit of rate (joules per second). It means what is going on right now. there is no 10,000 watts cumulatively over several days. That doesn't even make sense. It would like saying that your car can handle 100MPH cumulatively over several days.

At one time, I had a fullsize fridge, fullside freezer, laptop and Verizon router and back-up battery. If I had to run one of the sump pumps, I would wait until either the fridge or freezer cycled off, then I would run a pump.

Any suggestion for spreading the word would be appreciated. I have been asking Danny to do advertising on PC and never get a reply back. My thread regarding this inverter has been removed as spam. And again they didn't reply to my appeal. I am afraid that they might banned me again if I say too much in regard to any new products.

You might Google up "Prius as Generator". A company has had 2 and 3 kw inverters for the Prius traction battery for a year now.

I have a 1575w continuous / 3000w peak Cobra I bought with cables for about $120 earlier this spring. I have it set up for my 2010 Prius with a high-amp quick-disconnect connector. With IRMA approaching (date today is 9/7/2017) I have a question about my Prius.

I have an attached garage, and would like to keep the Prius in the garage. I have lots of tools and other things that could be stolen, so I want to keep the garage door shut. Since the garage has no windows, I don't want to run the Prius in the garage.

I could back the Prius up to the garage door and run extension cords under the garage door weather seal.

Can I start the Prius, with lights/accessories/AC off, and lock the car? I can't just leave the fob in the car because it beeps at me. Is there a way to set it all up, start the car, and lock the doors from the outside? I have a factory fob with the key also.

If locking with the key, do I need to leave a fob inside the car so it will run?

Thanks so much, and I can provide an after-action report on the Cobra next week.

Your inverter is awfully big to bolt to a G3's battery, and I'm not sure what benefit you will get from putting the car into ready mode in N instead of just running the ICE in Park with a hose venting the exhaust outside. You may even consider a stuffing tube (pipe running through a side wall) for this.

I'm thinking that without the ICE running that the G3 will power your inverter for a very short period of time, and you'll wind up with a "car wash Prius"
You can put the car in ready mode walk away with the keyfob in your pocket. (I do it often) and it will only beep at you three times IIRC. If you want to lock the door and have it stay locked then you'll have to leave a window open.

    Good Luck!
I strongly recommend that you do some quick field testing before the lights go dim.

I would want the IC running as needed, so I would leave it in Park. I want it to provide power as long as needed. I didn't know that about the key fob.

I ordered 2 18" by 2" flex exhaust and a connector and clamps. This is getting interesting!

    thanks!

Make sure that you don't overload the inverter in the Prius.
@bwilson4web has experience with this subject and can be counted on for some real-world knowledge as opposed to things beginning with "I think....."
That having been said, I think that you will be fine running a few LED house bulbs, and some electronics and "maybe" a small freezer....BUT....your inverter is capable of drawing 1.75kw off peak, which added to the hotel loads from the Prius might be getting close to peak output for the car's inverter. (not your inverter...)

Add "check inverter coolant and have an emergency top-off supply" to your list maybe......

    Good Luck!
Keep us posted while you can!!

Also, you might think about taking this off the Plug in Prius forum and moving it to the Gen three forum. ;)

How do I move the post?

I did get a six foot 2" exhaust pipe flex and exhaust clamp. I will have it venting outside the garage. [IMG]
