I just bought a new 2013 Prius Three. I see the "DRL" option on the light switch for daytime running lights but they don't seem to work. Is this not a stock option for the Prius Three?

The DRL are the small rectangular lights in the bumper. If they are not on when the switch is on AND the car is in READY, than something is wrong.

On my 2012 they don't come on until the parking brake is released.

Also, in "Setup", I believe you can also turn them "off". I haven't played with it but ran across that when I was customizing my settings. I assume if you set it to off, the won't turn on regardless?

Yes, you can toggle the off/on in your set up menu under "Vehicle". Also, the DLR's do not stay on when headlights are on.

On the DRLs, it looks like there are 6 LEDs on either side, but on mine, only the top 4 on each side are lit. I never really paid them much attention until today and it seems it would be a bit of a coincidence if the bottom two on both sides burned out. Anyone else have more than 4 on each?

It has 6 lenses -- more like 5 and a half-- but only 4 LEDs. When off, the LEDs are the yellowish patches behind the lenses, present only at the top 4 spaces. The lower clear spaces are just decorative.

Only 4 LED in there but has lens for 6. Cost reduction?

In regards to the customized setting, when you turn it off, it overrides the switch. Once set it off, it will not turn off when the switch is set to DRL.

Lens for 5 and a half, not 6. I strongly suspect they are driven in pairs, not singly, so it never had 6 LEDs.

    So it is cosmetic.

    You're right 5.5.

Anyone open it up? I want the light to be in a vertical row vs. 2x2.

Are the DRL supposed to come on automatically during the day even when the headlights are switched off? (I thought they were supposed to, but mine don't.. even though my settings have DRL turned on)

No, you have to physically turn the knob to DRL for them to be on.

Auto ON is only on Trim 4 and 5, Persona along with all other trims have auto off.

Without knowing the actual details about how the LEDs are electrically driven, I'm going to guess that there is a reasonable chance (significantly greater than 0%, but less than 50%) that you could modify it by disabling half the lights, leaving a vertical pair lit. But there would be a similar chance of getting a horizontal pair instead, and a significant remaining probability of getting none of the above. And I won't pay for the repairs if you don't get what you want.

Getting a vertical row of 3 lamps will require both electrical and mechanical modifications, with a 98% chance that the mechanical changes not be within my ordinary skills. :).

DRL is supposed to be inherently auto-on, as in always on when moving unless some other headlights are on.

My 2012 Three works that way, I don't yet fully understand the changes made for 2013. What is different about this system, compared to Canada and to some other US systems, is that the driver has a configurable choice of DRL or not.

That really upset me when I figured it out ONLY after I bought the car.
