I believe the manual states the filters should be changed every 30k miles, so technically the won't be covered during the 2 yr/25k free maintenance period. But dealers will try to get you to replace them more often when they bring out the filters and show you how dirty they are. Mine tried that on me - didn't work. Perhaps I should've asked if it was included in the free maintenance plan?

If you take the filter elements out and write you initials on them, then you will at least know if the dealer is actually showing you your own filter.

Great tip! I know if I replace my air filters just before going in for service, they won't approach me about it.

I know there are threads on this but be careful when you replace the cabin air filter. The Denso filter used by Toyota has an arrow on it indicating "this end up" when the actual air flow is down. Most replacement cabin filters have an arrow pointing in the direction of airflow so it's very easy to put it in upside down. My Toyota dealer told me I installed the filter upside down so I had to explain this to him.

As for oil changing, I have a Mobil One garage down the street that wants 90 bucks for synthetic oil and filter change. My local Toyota dealer does it for 50 bucks, no appointment required, and give a great free lunch to all service customers which works for me.

I did an oil change and transaxle oil change at 5000 miles. The dealership charged me $87 for the transaxle and $51 for the synthetic oil and filter. They tried to talk me out of the transaxle oil change, but I insisted. I'll be back for the freebie at 10,000.

I went to a large car service parts supplier in the UK yesterday "Halfords". The asking price for Mobil 1 0w20 oil was a little over £21 per litre (about the same volume as a US quart) making the cost for 4 litres £85 or $136 just to buy the oil. Now thats what I call a rip off.

There oil selection charts also stated the Toyota recommended oil for the gen3 Prius as being 0w30 which we all no is not correct. All this from probably the largest motorist supply chain in the country.

You should absolutely complain ... the oil cap says 0-20W the manual says the same allows 5k for 5-20W if the next is the right one .. THEY did not follow prius specs...

But otherwise the price is comparable what toyota would have charge ...one thing to repalce cabin filter or even the ICE filter is absolutely easy. Even if you buy the OEM parts you can easily do it (well maybe not) . But both is very easy. But changing the light bulb (lower beam) boy that is hard on the passanger side ... not impossible but hard for the first time.

    Wow!

The last 0W20 I purchased was Toyota brand, at the part's counter, for $5.65 (Canadian) per liter.

I just checked my cabin air filter the other day and it was in upside down, ooops. It still kept the pollen, dust, acorns, and mouse droppings out of the blower motor just as effectively as if it was right side up.

Me thinks direction isn't as important as making sure you don't flip the filter if it's removed and reinserted. My filter is still upside down, because I want the mouse dander to stay on the side away from the blower motor.
