BACK UP CAMERA FOR 2012 PRIUS two TOUCH SCREEN- NON NAV

I also bought a little different camera. It was the same as far as circuitry I'm pretty sure, but I has the option to adjust the camera position. I'd include a link, but I still don't have "link privileges." I'm not sure if it ended up being any better than the non-adjustable ones, as it still ended up pointing too much to the ground. But I was able to wedge it a little to get a camera angle I'm quite happy with that I don't think I could have accomplished with the other cameras.

Whew, hope y'all followed me on that.

I love your wiring pictures of the kickpanel. I wonder what would be easier/foolproof making your own voltage regulator or removing the insulation around the existing regulator and removing the resistor ?
Also, it looks like you removed the pins from the connector and wrapped the camera wires around the pins and then taped them, correct ?

I think removing the insulation around the existing regulator and removing one of the two resistors is far easier than fabricating a regulator. Just use an Exacto knife and be careful with what you're doing.

Wrapped and taped pins... yep that's exactly what I did. That way if for any reason in the future I should want to, I can undo the tape, pull the camera wires, and plug the original wires right back in where they came from.

Look for a 2N2907. Just about any PNP that is rated for 500mA collector current will work. You can usually find these on Ebay where you can get a bunch for less than a single from Mouser, etc. Most will ship as fast as a distributor, even from China. Glad to see this topic is still alive and active.

I just experienced a rodent attack on the speed sensor wiring when I parked at the airport at the edge of an open field for a week. Over $500 damages. I think Toyota may have switched to organic (soy) based wiring insulation about 2009 which attracts rodents. Toyota makes note of using organic materials for the seat cushions and interior plastics. It did smell different from my prior new cars when I bought it. Researching other threads here on Priuschat.

Should have done it before I replied. I just checked the Mouser site for the Fairchild SS8550. It is the same transistor that I used. It should work. Rated at 1.5 amp. I've been running for 8 months now without a hiccup.

To those that have run the wires for your cameras, did you use solid 24 gauge 4 conductor phone wire ? Thanks

 

I used the video wire that came with the camera. It only had two wires (Video+, and the shield which I used for Video- or ground). I had to run an extra wire for the power to the camera.

 

I don't know if anyone saw my thread about it but I have the opposite scenario, OEM camera but aftermarket head unit. I've connected everything but the power for the camera since it's a 6V camera and I only have as 12V power source (ACC) to connect to it. Is there a way I can reduce the 12V to 6 easily? (Or can the camera accept 12V?)

I just created the thread that explains how to install the backup camera that hopefully has all the info in 6 appends instead of 370 appends. Please take a look at it and let me know if I missed something or something is incorrect.
One area that could use expanding is the 6 volt relay route. I'm not sure what relays people are using. I know there was some concern about putting too much current on the orange wire from the relay.

I've been following this thread for a long time and finally installed backup cam today.
I really want to thank the folks that pioneered this install as it saved me time and $.

I connected under the headliner. It wasn't too bad. Yes the headliner creases a bit, but no evidence after it's all back together. It is a bit of a pain working in there, but after removing all of the hatch trim panels, lowering the back of the headliner wasn't too bad. I removed the rear dome light and part of the left rear trim by that little rear window. I was going to tap into the connector wires, but ending cutting them and splicing on to my cable to save my sanity.
I also modified the in-line 3.3V voltage regulator that came with the camera to work on the 6V supply from the HU. I removed the surface mount resistors and used some conventional 1/4W parts I had laying around. I know many folks are scared away by the fine soldering skills needed, just take your time. Expect to re-solder all of the wiring connections as they will all break as you manipulate that little circuit board.

Whole job took me 5 hours including repairing that little regulator twice.
Although the headliner attach is more OEM, a slick solution would be a pre-made cable that connects to that headliner connector.

On a 1-10, this was a 5.
Right up there with changing valve cover gaskets on an A6.
Not because of difficulty, just tedious.

I thought I would share my recent camera installation. It costs a little more, but is a true plug and play setup. I ordered off Ebay and had it in 3 days. The installation was an absolute breeze, no more than an hour including drilling for the camera. I work on cars all the time, but really didn't want to dig around in the wiring of my daily driver. So for the people like me that just want to plug it in....this is fantastic.
It works like and charm and all components are very good quality. This kit literally plugs into the radio.
