Counter-intuitive mileage

    I've done exactly the same commute for the past 3 months, under nearly the exact same traffic conditions, and have gotten nearly exactly the same result each day: 15-16 miles on electric before ICE kicked in. I've not used the heater nor the a/c.

    Yesterday it got cold here, so I turned on the heater when I first started the car. Immediately I saw the expected electric range indicator decrease 12% as teh ICE kicked in immediately. But lo and behold, I got 18 miles of electric range. I figured it was an anomaly, but today I did it again, and this time I got 19 miles. Any explanation of why this is happening?

    Milrs driven with ICE on, isn't counted toward EV mile.

    How are you determining 18 to 19 miles?

    :confused:I'm under the assumption that "any" EV miles accumulated before or after the ICE cuts on or off aren't credited towards total EV miles or percentage. That's for each segment from start to park.

    I'm just watching the dash display of EV miles. Even though ICE goes on when I turn the car on with the heater, the car is still running on electric power.

    The computed estimated range on EV automatically drops with any usage of the fan and it the same for fan only, fan+heat or fan+AC.

    ICE will not shut down until the "borrowed" charge is returned back into the battery (charge sustain). Hence, they are counted as HV miles.

    Yes, assuming the warm up process completed. In that case, you will lose EV miles since ICE has not returned the borrowed charge.

    If you had 9 EV miles and triggerred the ICE with a heavy foot, driving during engine warm up could use a few EV miles up.

    Before ICE could recharge it back to 9 miles (state of charge when ICE started), you can force shutdown ICE by pressing the EV button.

    In that case, you'll only have 7 EV miles left displayed whereas before it was 9 miles.

    It's a loss of EV miles but can be a win in MPG since I suppose that when 'returning' these EV miles ICE is producing more than what is needed to move. To me it is a win-win situation.
    All this is done in order to minimize pollution in the warm-up session - another win.

    If I know I'm going to run out of EV I will usually hit the EV button at around 1 mile or so (or another efficient use of the low power ICE output) to go into HV then hit it again to go back into EV. I would say in most cases it's not the most efficient method to have the ICE make up for lost miles.

    Here's my EV reading from this morning, with ICE starting up along with the heater. I still seem to be getting mostly EV miles, so I'm confused as to how the ICE is dissipating that, except for the obvious times shown on the screen. Image.jpg

    That's a lot of regeneration! Are you trying to time lights at all?

    Remember your consumption screen only goes to 100 MPG, your car still could be using gas and your getting more than 100 MPG with the gas helping, so not all EV miles, gas is helping some. Screen can be a little misleading.

    I agree. I was pointing out that it would not increase the EV miles (as OP indicated).

    Just because you got higher than 100 MPG does not mean it is EV mile.

    You need to be in the "EV Driving Ratio" screen (see below for mine) to see the miles roll into either EV or HV side.

    Certainly in the warm-up session you get many times over 100 MPG.
    Your 'consumption' screen should be in fact called efficiency screen. We, with the European model have this screen in liters per 100 km (the smaller the bar - the better) so really a consumption screen, and I can see sometimes 2 l/100 or less on it during warm-up.

    I think I get OP's point. By using gas for cabin heat, you lessen battery usage thus extending the "electrifying" driving range.

    Energy from gas isn't used just for heat. It also drives the wheel.

    Doesn't warming the battery from warming the cabin also add to the efficiency of the battery?
