So I found an easier way to disable the Vehicle Proximity Notification System than reaching down from the Driver Side of the engine bay. I unbolted the driver side fender lining and just reached in and unplugged it. Super easy just a couple of push pins and a small bolt. When you open the fender lining up you will see the back of the speaker and a white wire harness. Just unclip it and you're done. I circled the wire harness you need to disconnect in the picture. By the way in the picture I already disconnected the harness. The whole process took about 5 mins. Hope this helps you guys out. :)

This is the view when you open up the fender lining. Unplug the white wire harness I circled in this pic. (In this picture I already unplugged the wire harness)

Front view of the speaker. Sorry I couldn't focus on my camera phone. It was to dark. :(

wouldn't it be great if someone came up with a kit that had a plug that fit in between the two you pull apart and wiring and oem switch for the dash.

Even better, figure out where the opposite end of those wires are.

I was thinking they eventually connect to the drive system, since the noise only activates when the car is in gear. But there should be intermediate stops along the way. A good schematic is required to trace them.

I just unplugged my speaker and it was right where the picture points it to be. I love it, I can drive more stealthy. Its annoying however to hear all of the other people driving when you're trying to test the stealthiness of your car. Almost have to go to the middle of nowhere to actually see if you can hear anything, the loudest part of my car tho where the tires and the whining of my electric motor.

that's true. about the only place i can hear the vpns is in my garage. i was trying to pull out of a paking space this morning at church, and a guy standing directly in front of me, looking the other way, never heard it. i had to beep to get his attention.

I disconnected mine the hard way from above, but it's easier to do it like above because of the plug detent. Mine even had a plug holder on the harness to secure the disconnected plug.

It was interesting that the dealer noted the fact that the VPNS was disabled on the work order for the first service/oil change.

I love sneaking into the garage, with my car, the only way my wife knows im home is when I open the garage door, so now to change the garage door tot he silent motor. Getting stealthier one piece at a time.

Thanks for the info and photos.

My 2010 does not have the VPNS system but I am planning to purchase the next gen Prius when it comes out. At that time, I will evaluate the VPNS sound and if it is the same as current models, I will disconnect it. Has anyone asked their dealer to disconnect it? My preference would be to have a driver-controlled switch that I would leave off most of the time but would be able to switch it on to play a Chrysler turbine car sound for special occasions.

Does anyone know if they moved the speaker on the 2014 Prius? I opened the panel and couldn't find the speaker. The sound is driving me crazy on warm open window days.

Take a look behind the grill next to the passenger side horn.

I hate the high pitched noise coming from the VPNS. Does any one know if the speaker on the 2021 Prius Prime is located in the same place? Also, do you have to remove the wheel to do this?
    Thanks.
