PIP Mileage deterioration

    Most I ever got was 11.3 estimate, maybe if I drive very carefully I can squeeze an extra 2 accual miles out of it.

    Estimated value calculations remain elusive. I watched mine climb to a record high of 13.9 miles following a multi-day trip milking just a single-charge with +400 mile drives in between. It made no difference with actual miles.

    After 1.5 years and close to 30,000 miles, the real-world results are consistent. The morning commute runs out of EV in the same span of road it has from the beginning.

    I can't think of any logical reason for this but I'm wondering if mist/fog can somehow kill range ?
    Now that its not summer my daily driving is the same every day, every week and this morning driving my wife to the train I saw a big drop in actual. Pea soup type fog but not cold - 57 degrees which is a good 10 warmer than some recent morning drives and wasn't driving any differently... PiP went a good 3 miles less than recent norm

    Should have a new MPGe entry by the end of the week - guess I'd better take full advantage of the predicted 70 degree days ;)

    Fog at higher speeds would affect it some but shouldn't much at lower speeds. Fog obviously means the air is more dense which takes more energy to push it out of the way.

    I agree with John. At 18 months, and almost 22k miles in, I have seen my estimate rise and drop many times, from a low in the low 10s to a 14.1 (once). Regardless, on the same trip every day, I get the same amount of EV use. The battery rarely cuts out early or leaves me with excess range. And when it does, I can almost always point to some event that happened during the drive that caused it. Actually, I'm waiting for the inevitable decline in battery health, and by extension, capacity. I wonder how many years it will go, go, go. I'm sure the fact that it's never completely discharged or completely charged up goes a long way into that equation.

    I had my 2012 Prius PIP in Oct 2012 and it started out about 12 miles and now it's about 9.2 miles. I drive the same way. The other thing I noticed was: When I just got the car, ChargePoint station showed that it charged about 3.4 kWh for a full charge. Now it says about 2.8 kWh. So I think the battery is deteriorated. I have not talk to the dealer yet.
    I got my Prius PIP a little more than a year ago. It had about 12 miles and now it has 9.2 miles.

    I just don't believe "the mileage displayed will adjust to your driving style". I have not changed my driving style at all. I use cruse control most of the time. I think the battery is deteriorated. Should I talk to Toyota about this? I don't really want to waste my time.

    :confused: I once thought the some thing. I've had my PIP since January 2013. When new, my estimated EV range was 12 miles. My daily work commute is 9.8 miles one way, 75% interstate, mostly flat, cruise set at 60. I charge daily, home and work. I can normally make the trip all EV, unless the ICE cuts on. During the summer, my max EV range after charging was 10.1 miles. Coincidence or not? I could never understand how others are achieving 14 - 18 miles on a EV charge? One day this summer, I took a longer, more rural, stop and go route, with one stop. I was surprised I made it home with some EV charge left. I would estimate the route was at least 14 miles. Less confused now than before.

    :)I'd prefer "90 year old man". My Prius has made me more mellow. With a PIP, my objective is to drive as many miles EV as possible. The difference between driving 60 vs 65 (interstate) for a 9.8 miles commute is minutes.

    I agree with -1- above. Most of us don't have the luxury of ideal EV commuting conditions, but if you could drive 15-20 mph on a perfectly flat road on a nice warm sunny day with no stops, you could do over 20 miles all EV. OTOH, on a cold winter day with mostly freeway speeds and hills, you're likely to get 10 mile EV or less.

    Weather conditions play a big part in EV range ESTIMATES as well. My Volt range estimate varies by as much as 10 miles depending on weather, heater usage and driving speeds. I usually see a range of 45-50 miles in summer but it's dropping to 38 miles so far this winter.

    welcome to priuschat! the estimated range doesn't adjust to your driving style, it adjusts to how many mles you drive in ev before the charge runs out. it's not exact and tends to be a bit conservative. i.e., my estimated range is currently 12.4. but i can eek out 13 or 14 if i try. my first winter, i thought as you do, but found out the next spring that it's just the dropping temps. all the best!(y)

    That estimated value pretty much goes down for everyone. The system collects driving data and adjusts to give you a more accurate idea of what you might get. It's only an approximation though. Focus on what you actual results instead.

    2.8 kWh is dead on. That's what you are supposed to get. More would come about if you run the A/C remotely.

    I hear your problem, and first you need to calm down. There are many factors that effect electric range and a lot of them can be managed. If you live in a hilly area that’s where most of your EV mileage is going,
    Cold weather also causes a big drop. I get 12 miles of range in the warm weather and down to 8 to 9 in the very cold weather here in the east. Come warmer weather above 50 deg it all goes back up. If your area is very hilly like mine is here, let the car switch into ICE assist mode, once this happens after a short heat up cycle you’ll switch back and forth from hybrid to pure EV quickly and your mileage will be 80 to 100 MPG. Where you save big time is on short trips, what I do all day long. Running any gas engine even a Prius never does well on very short trips, but your PIP will give you 100 MPG all the time driving around town. In two years I have filled up my PIP twice with gas! I use a high-speed charger and just plug in and go.

    My problem isn't driving fast on interstate its on local streets where if you don't drive at lest 5 mph above the limit they crawl up your behind.
