Engine Splash Shield Fell Off

There are threads posted about a year or two ago regarding this problem. Some have modified it themselves while others had Toyota replaced it under warranty. I had mine replaced under warranty by the dealer but it was when the vehicle was one or two years old. Do your forum search here before talking to the service manager again. I heard Toyota made it with better plastic on later model years.

 

The 2010 Toyota Prius plastic under body has a TSB on it. I don't know if your dealer would replace the entire piece for you under the TSB or not, it all depend on them.

As for the missing piece, you can't replace just that piece, its a whole plastic piece.

And yes, your Prius is fine without that plastic piece, as long as you don't go over a solid rock and damage your oil pan.

 

After numerous oil changes, my flap broke off about two years ago. Vehicle was out of warranty period. I have done nothing about it, nor has any dealer shop recommended replacement. Vehicle still flawless at 83,000. Maybe engine gets a little dirtier because flap is missing. Not planning to run down large rocks in near future. Why worry?

 

As posted elsewhere I tore my entire under body thingy off running over a large dead Kangaroo at high speed while overtaking a truck. Despite dollar parity at the time it cost $550.00 to replace. It won't harm your Prius to leave it off but I did notice a small spike in fuel consumption while it was missing.

It'll last fine IF that "oil maintenance" flap is never used, ie: the whole panel is removed for an oil change.

 

Which is what I always do.

 

I used that flap on my first oil change, and right away it was: "something's wrong here". Tried to bend the flap down, and the entire panel was flexing. Rap the panel with your fingers and it almost sounds like metal, very hard, evidently brittle as well.

 

That's what happened with me, I didn't like the way the thing bent, so I took the whole panel down and did it that way ever since. Plus, you get to see if there's any nests in there.

I got one from PartsGeek.com just to have an extra to experiment with.

It came rolled up in a long gigantic box. For me, I found out, it was about $49 delivered in one day by UPS since it was shipped from Charlotte, NC, just about 100 miles away.

The panel is made in Taiwan of vacuum formed textured black polyethylene. Instead of being die cut as the OEM panel is, the panel is hand cut and shows rough edges.

It is a clone of the older type, NOT the NEWER one with the wide radiused hinge area. It will evidently still need the piano hinge conversion to achieve longevity.

The panel does not contain any hardware of the insulating panels or anything else.

I have NOT installed it and will keep it as a spare. It would also serve are a nice pattern for making just the replacement door out of aluminum sheet to be attached with rivets and a piano hinge.

 

Thanks for the update, I'm considering ordering one since my oil change door is missing. I'm just having a hard time convincing myself that the missing door makes that much difference, don't have to fool with it at oil change time. I'm still on the fence as to whether I should order it.

If I was in business, I would make and sell just the replacement door with just the piano hinge kit installed.

The only problem would be some doofus who would complain that the kit is defective, NOT being honest about his or her lack of abilities.

 

I got the partsgeek engine shield for my pre-owned 2010 Prius since it was missing the oil change flap completely. I assume there was an insulating panel on the oil change flap. Does anyone know if that part if available somewhere? I searched partsgeek but did not find it.

Only Toyota. And, you have t buy the entire engine cover for over $200.

You can make a shield out of aluminum roof flashing or fiberglass mat, which is cheaper.
