I'm the second owner of Pristine...sorry 2004 Prius. I'm so close to the 200,000 mile marker I can taste it! When we got the car from Toyota in 2012 we got a list of the car fax and whoever had it before us put a good 168,000 miles on it but kept up the maintenance to a T. So my question is since I'm approaching the 200,000 marker, what maintenance services should I be considering??

Transaxle oil change and spark plugs are probably the most likely unless they've been done recently.

The published maintenance schedule goes up to 120K miles, then repeats. Assuming that the prior services were fully performed per the schedule, you would perform the 80K mile service at this time which is basically just an engine oil/oil filter change and tire rotation. In addition:

If the transaxle ATF had not been changed in the last 60K miles, that should be done now.
If the engine PCV valve was not replaced in the last 100K miles, that should be done now.
If the engine and inverter/transaxle coolant was not replaced in the last 50K miles, that should be done now.
The front struts and rear shocks should be inspected.

All rubber components (the serpentine belt, radiator and heater hoses) should be inspected and replaced as needed.

How old is the 12V battery? If more than 5 years old, you may want to replace it as a preventive measure since you won't get much advance warning of a pending failure.

My 2007 prius has 214000 miles and now and needs a new catalytic converter. The 2 o2 sensors are working according to the mechanic who checked the 0420 code that has been on for a month. The car runs fine, but emissions aren't as good. The only other repair other than the routine maintenance mentioned above, was the water pump.

Any idea on how much these services run?
As far as the 12V battery, we haven't replaced it in the 2 years I've had it...but I might need to check the car fax again and see if anything comes up.
I also had a question. I went onto the dealership under maintenance and they give you the option of "Battery Service" of around $50 and Battery replacement of around $125. PLEASE correct me but what am I looking at $125 vs a battery pack around $2600. What am I not realizing here?

The 12 volt battery in the hatch of the car would cost 125.00 new, the huge electric battery also in the hatch under the carpet(you can see it if you break the back down to see the spare tire, its the big shiny metal thing behind the passenger seats) would cost 2600.

Bare in mind that the 12 volt battery that normally goes in the Prius is more along the lines of $200.00 from the dealers plus labor to install. Chances are the $125.00 figure is a advertisement for a non hybrid car such as a Camry.

The Prius takes a AGM type battery with the JIS "reversed" posts which is also vented via a vent tube. It is also a sealed battery.

Below is a view of what the area looks like with the 12 volt battery exposed.

The battery is nestled in the right rear corner of this view.

A German engineer gets a rainbow shooting out of his butt everytime a VW hits 200k miles. What happens to a Japanese engineer when a Toyota reaches 200k miles? :D
