Aftermarket Wheel Thread

    ^What width are you running? Anything over 7-7.5 is going to impact your mpg pretty good from the guys I've talked with. I'm running 16x7 on 195x50 tires and can't really tell a difference in mpg...it's my heavy foot that kills it for me every time, lol.

    7.5 - the tires are 205s

    From my initial tests looks like its impacting it around 4-6 mpg does that sound about right?

    I'm getting 48 consistently with my heavy foot and lowered. I can still get into the 50s if I chill on the throttle but Ive adopted some really bad habits over the last 4 months that I keep saying I will shake.

    Hahah Yea, they need a "Super Eco Mode" that will really restrict the throttle. Basically forcing you to hyper mile LOL. Id use it!

    I wouldn't mind a real eco mode where the ecu remaps for economy at the sacrifice of power and comfort.

    Both Tirerack.com and discounttiredirect.com have the ability to show the wheels on your car. Both will show you the fitment of wheels that avoid rubbing but not always if you drop the car with lowering springs.. Additionally, and more important, tirerack has the specs for aftermarket wheels. The heavier the wheel the more negative the effect on mpg but thats nowhere near as important as the weight of the tire, which tirerack also provides in tire specs.

    I'm looking at throwing on some of these Drag DR-38 17x7 wheels but am having a hard time finding any LRR tires in the 205/40r17 range. However, there are options at the 205/45R17 level. Would those rub or still be clear?

    that's not going to make a difference in regard to rubbing. 205 is the size, the 40 or 45 just means how much rubber is showing on the sidewall, affecting appearance and weight.

    I run on 215/45/17 on 17x7 42 offset. There is rubbing if I absolutely max turn the wheels, which is not something I do anyway and my turn radius is fine. 205/x/17 or lower seems the right fit for 17's on a stock suspension without extreme wheel sizes and offsets.

    edit: anyway, let me just post my set up here.

    Wheel Brand : Kosei
    Wheel Model : K1 TS
    Wheel Weight (preferably from a scale, but manufacturer weight is ok) 14.6
    Size: 17x7
    Offset: 42
    Tire Size: 215 / 45 / 17 LRR Hankook Optimo H426
    Tire Pressure Monitors: none
    Difference felt in ride quality (if any): better cornering with wide tire but 4-5 mpg loss on highway, 2-3 on street.
    Price Paid: $760 cash, no shipping.
    Fitment Issues: tire rubs on turn to full extreme.

    Awesome, thanks for the input. I really want some LRR tires and they're hard to come by at 17'' and >=205. Might have to back off to 16''

    It's an intelligent choice. Every logical conclusion I came to said 15s or 16s but these voices in my head kept whispering "get the 17s...get the 17s". I am powerless against their influence. :D 17 & up are really "I'm going to trick my car out" sizes, you can recover lost mpgs with the right modifications but it's, you guessed it, more money.

    I know EXACTLY what you mean. The 17s were calling my name but those Michelin Energy Saver A/S are so tall I'm not completely confident they'd pass the scrub test on a 16''. Pirelli, Continental, Goodyear and a few others have 'efficient' tires in that 16'' size that would work but none are rated or tested nearly as well as the Michelins. As you can tell I had my heart set on those specific tires so I backed off the rim size to a *sigh* 15'' Konig Feather wrapped with Energy Savers in 185/65r15. Plus my speedometer will only be about 1mph off @65mph so that's not too bad either. New wheels and tires will be on by this time next week at which time I'm heading out on a road trip. Once back in town I'll post specs with the OP specifics, pics and MPG feedback. It's time to piss off the locals with some epic hypermiling!

    Nice! you're going to love being on a wider tire and not on those flimsy 5 inches the factory supplies us with :eek: It's a nice looking tire too and only weighs 12 lbs each I believe, about 3 lbs lighter than stock wheels.

    Is it going to be 1mph over or 1mph under? The factory speedo is technically 2mph under actual speed, so if it's 1mph over you would be closer to actual speed than the factory.

    The circumference of the wheel is increasing so I'd be traveling 1mph faster than my speedometer shows. About the factory speedometer being 2mph off, I've heard this argument but not sure I'm buying it. At least it doesn't seem to be applicable to my car. A friend of mine is a Sheriff and we did some testing with his radar, both runs at 25mph and 50mph came out spot on accurate to the speedometer. Either way, 1-2mph isn't much to worry about. Can't wait for my new shoes to get here Thursday!

    I've used three methods to determine it on two different C's. Granted that is a small test pool, but both were identical. Tires inflated to factory, not above.
    1) Speed catch sign near school zone. Actual speed 30, sign showed 27-28.
    2) GPS through Torque app (Also had torque connected through cars computer and it showed 2 mph over from what the car was showing me).
    3) Cop buddy with gun. His was the closest as only ~1 mph off.

    But you're right. 1-2 isn't going to get you a ticket, or out of one.
