    Hello guys,

Hope you can give me an advice because my 2nd gen Prius started to act strange after 6 years.

The problem I noticed is that the ICE is running too much, for example even when I am stopped after 30-40 minutes of continuous drive (no traffic jam), hot weather (about 27 C degrees, 80 F), battery showing 7 lines.

Even when I try to enter EV mode I am not allowed.

Please see some pictures below. All 3 made when stopped. In the past the ICE was off in these conditions.

Maybe the ventilation of hybrid system is bad ? I see no other explanations.

I am looking forward to your answer.

    Dan

Are you familiar with the stages of operation? You're likely in S3b you need to stop for 7 to 10 seconds with the ice on (until it shuts off) to get it into s4.

Assuming that this is indeed a change, yes, the 12V failing can cause the engine to stay running. With a shorted cell the battery will not charge to full, causing the converter portion of the inverter to work overtime. That particular scenario does not set any codes/DTC.

    Thank you both!

I know the stages And I know I have to wait 10 seconds for the ICE to stop. But îs keeping running for at least 3-5 minutes.

12 V battery replaced 2 months ago, I have measured myself 1 week ago And îs ok.

    Îs something else.

did you measure it in the morning before starting, at the terminals with a digital multimeter and it's at least 12.6v?

Without any instrumentation, we can only guess. You could try pulling the connection to the 12V battery for a couple of minutes, and thereby resetting the ECU's. Otherwise, perhaps there is a problem with a temperature sensor reading too low, causing the Engine ECU to think that warm up has not occurred? You would need to get the mini VCI and read the various temperature sensors to check that. Check the coolant level in the radiator (not the overflow reservoir).

What happens when you first start up the car from cold, if you just leave it in Park? Does the engine shut off after a minute or so?

    Hello Bisco,

I have checked the 12 V battery this morning, after 6 hours the car was parked and the measurement was 12.55 V.

    Hello nh70,

After starting the car this morning I have counted about 2 minutes until the ICE stopped, so seems to be ok.

Yesterday evening I have parked and the ICE was running (after 20 minutes ride). I was curious when ICE will stop and after 15 minutes was still running.

Will do today the 12 V disconnection and check the level of coolant in the radiator and look after a mini VCI.

One more thing that might be a hint:

I noticed that even if I park and the ICE is still running, if I turn of the car and come back in 15 -20 minutes (like after a short shopping visit), I start the car again and then I immediately enjoy few minutes the golf cart mode.

So is entering in S4 but only after being shut down for a while.

Does your a/c need a regas? I notice it's 27c which whilst not hot is quite warm. If you run the a/c a lot with low gas the car will be working overtime to cool down.

Also, as discussed in another thread, keeping the car on recirc does seem to overheat the battery (some owners have proof compared to using outside air flow) as it is working harder to run the a/c getting hot in the process but the flow of air doesn't cool it down. The car then runs the engine almost like a generator to ease the load off the battery. Assuming you don't block the vent in the back seat?

    Thank you.

When this is happening I am not using A/C, in fact I am using it very seldom, only when temperatures goes over 35 Celsius (95 F). Even when I run it, the a/c seems to be efficient, no problems like not enough cooling or too long waiting for cooling.

Vent of hybrid system not blocked, but, as I have some dogs I used to keep in the back, maybe in 6 years, some fur might get inside the fans. I will check this too.

Two things (which likely aren't applicable) that could cause engine to keep running when the car's stopped:

    1. Cabin temperature control set highish.
    2. Defog mode chosen.

And just being the class clown:

The more I read the thread title, the less sense it makes. ;)

    :) indeed Mendel,

Only after I post the title I realized : " running when stopped " :)

Yes, dog hair can be an important a factor. Can you hear the battery fan running on high speed? Since the car is not setting a DTC, I suspect not.

Also, don't be afraid to use A/C. If you are feeling warm, then the batteries will be warm also.

Check spark plugs, air filter, clean maf sensor, throttle body.

Also there is a collar where the air filter housing mounts to the intake. Is it tightened?

As far as I have noticed, if heating is off, the reason for the prius keeping the engine running is that something is amiss re how the engine drinks its air and fuel and how well it is ignited.

    Hello,

up to now I did the following:

    - cleaned battery fan (I thought will find there lot a fur, but no, just dusty)
    - disconnected the 12 V for few minutes
    - checked the coolant level in the radiator (not only in the bottle) - it was full

After doing all these above still having ICE running when parked.
I will receive the mini VCI at the beginning of September, looking forward to see the output of this.

I will check spark plugs, air filter, clean maf sensor, throttle body, collar for air filter - need to learn a little before reaching them.

how many miles on her? are you still getting similar mpg's/litre's? could be your hv battery.

    Hello bisco,

    I have 121.000 km = 75.000 miles
I didn't watch the MPG too closely, I was focus to see when the ICE was stopping (when parked, when stopped at traffic light, when gliding) and I noticed that ICE still running too much.

Now, after the 12 V disconnection I have only 93 km (57 miles) and a consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 km (41.27 MPG). It is a good value indeed - I remember the average some weeks ago was 35 MPG.

I will see how MPG is changing in the future - 57 miles is quite a small distance to judge.

Anyway, the ICE is still running when parked after 40 minutes drive, battery having 5-6 lines, no A/C, warm outside - which is not normal. I notice this started to happen after I left the car in service once, but only for a painting of the front bumper - shouldn't have any interference.
Since then I asked also for a hybrid system check and all was ok.
I will post here the hybrid system check - done one month ago.

I am looking forward for the mini VCI, maybe this will tell me more.
