TL;DR - This procedure worked great! Great description of the steps involved.

I have a 2006 Prius that I needed a second key for. As recommended in this article, I purchased a brand new SKS key looked up via VIN Number at the local Toyota dealer - part number matched what is listed here - 89994-47061 - total price $142 and change. Cutting the emergency door key (in case the SKS and fob button functionality fail to work) is included in that price. They cut it from the first key, rather than doing so by VIN number (would have taken longer and required more paperwork verification).

Procedure A for key-in-slot car starting functionality took me two tries IIRC - wasn't difficult.
Procedure B took about 7 tries before it worked properly. I kept forgetting the second "open and close door twice" part of the procedure (Step 5), and I think the timing on 9a, 9b,and 9c really have to be done in quick succession (he's not lying/exaggerating about the 3 seconds between 9b and 9c).

After going through with these procedures, the key works perfectly. The key may be expensive, and you may be able to get a used key cheaper on Ebay, however if you do that - you cannot program it yourself - and would have to pay a Toyota dealer or a master locksmith to do the programming for you, and that may have a variable cost based on the hours of labor involved from said dealer or locksmith. This procedure makes the cost predictable - presently $142.

Likely not. This is only for Gen 2 Prii.

For a DIY you need techstream access. Worked for me on regular prius.

Thanks so much for the thread! I'm having an issue:

After performing steps 1-2 with a working fob, I can't get my 2007 Prius in programming mode. The anti-theft light keeps blinking.

Any idea what might be causing this? TIA!

That's step 4, it blinks. It should stop blinking in about a minute, after successful programming

Thanks JC! I thought about that (maybe "on" means "still blinking" vs "solid"), but it still wouldn't go off/stop blinking. I'm pretty sure this isn't user error, but I will try again when it's light out just be sure.

No one else has had similar problems with this method?

"On" means solid and not blinking.

I don't know what's causing your problem but, I encourage you to do one thing and report the results back here.
Insert your old/working fob into the fob slot and try to start the car. Report to us whether the car starts with the fob in the slot.

I have never had anyone have a problem with those steps.

I did a couple years ago have a problem you are describing while programming a key for slot use. I've done about 10 of these and didn't understand why that one wouldn't program. The light would just keep blinking and not program. I tried about 6 or 7 times and gave up in the end.

I thought it might have been the car having too many keys registered to it but "step 2" of the programming worked. It was able to be used as an SKS key to start the car and open the doors. Just it would not program to work in the slot.

The owner of the car had told me someone with a laptop tried before me and wasn't successful. Maybe there's a way to inadvertently turn off the programming via techstream or similar program? I couldn't figure it out but it wasn't my car so I didn't spend that much time on it.

I am delighted to report back that I repeated the instructions in the OP on a different day, and this time it worked like a charm!

No idea what the difference was (or even if there was one). I would encourage anyone who encountered difficulties similar to mine to simply take a break and try again.

Many thanks to OP and everyone who contributed to this useful thread. :)

This worked for me on my 2004 Prius. Took about three tries. And then clueless me couldn't figure out why the start button wouldn't work with the new key inserted and tried several more times. Turns out I needed to follow the first TWO parts of the instructions - I had only followed the second part which gives the SKS/Remote functions. D'oh. Everything is great now. Thank you so much for saving me a ton of money, especially just before Christmas.

So I read 8 pages and saw nothing about a black logo working on the SKS. Just got a used 2006, came with only one FOB.

I bought the 89904-47061 off Amazon (DaytonaToyota) and the logo is black, but with chrome outline. I was a bit anxious because I took this to mean I have the wrong FOB, as it is not chrome. (my old FOB black paint has worn off so it is now "chrome" - ha!)
    Paid $117.57

Well it worked just fine. Took only two attempts to get my timing right. All smart key functions working perfectly.

(Then, I found it for less after the fact, cannot recommend as I didn't purchase here but this may be a good tip at $74.95 2004 Toyota Prius - 89904-47011 or 89904-47061 Keyless Entry Remote, Key Faab)

    Thank you!

Can you post a pic of the new key fob with the black logo outlined in chrome? On all fobs I've ever seen, the entire logo is chrome. Additionally, can you post a pic of your old fob showing where the black paint has worn off?

All of this is news to me because every fob I've ever had, the entire logo was chrome. I've had a lot of fobs including, new ones, old ones, severely worn out ones.

    Thank you.

Yeah, that is what I'm use to. The entire logo is chrome on that one.

When I first bought my Prius, it was used and only came with one key fob and the dealer was unwilling to provide another one without charging for it. I've always wanted a second key fob, but just never got around to buying one.

four years later... a co-worker who drives a Gen III asked me if I ever had issues with my key-fob. I said no and explained how I only have one fob.
it turns out that their battery in the fob had just been used up, once they replaced the battery it was working great again... but I took this as a sign that I should really get a second key. I actively searched priuschat and came across this post.

I was able to find a non-sks (black label) key fob on eBay and was able to easily program the used key fob. I took me a few tries because I didn't follow the instructions properly... after I read the instructions and actually *followed* the instructions, it worked! I couldn't believe it!

    Thank you so much!

I just got me a used prius and it came with one key. I bought a new one off amazon from a North Florida dealership. Im trying to program the new one and just like drh4 I cant get to step 3 on procedure A (procedure B doesnt work either).

As asked by usnavystgc I put my old key fob in the slot and it DOES NOT start the car. When I take it out and press power it DOES start. So with old key it slot car does not start. With old key not in the slot car does start. Helllpppp

Whoever programmed you current "working" key only executed procedure B. Since that is the case, you will not be able to program a new key utilizing the chicken dance. You will have to either use the dealer or possibly order Techstream from EBay and try to program it that way.
