Clear you roof with a sponge and alcohol. I pulled the black trim off the roof and made my tape lines there. Overall it looks gritty but 100 times cooler than plain white.
By 100x cooler, I suppose you're saying that figuratively. Because it should be MUCH hotter literally...at least it would be down heah in Jawja.
Wrap it. Plasti dip is a great product but in an application like this vinyl is better IMO, the Prius roof is nice and smooth so wrapping isn't difficult, you can also get gloss black vinyl which will visually match much better with the from and rear windshield.
Decided to do the spoiler too with a different method of painting . Added glow paint to the brake light. Looks much better than the roof so when I get another warm weekend I'm going to touch up the roof. Wanted to do vinyl but was too pricey.
Thanks, for the spoiler I used plastidip then gloss black engine enamel. Decided to dip my side mirrors blaze blue to match my lug nuts and brakes. I'll take some pics on a sunny day soon. Certainly different look. Leaning towards making them black instead.
i voted to wrap because that's the way i'm leaning not that i want to pay for it - LOL. but, i think that it's great you've done what you have already done! joel
I was thinking about doing the same thing for my prius, (plasti-dipping the roof). How many cans did you use for your roof? PS. I like the blue mirrors really adds to your car!
you just have to hold the can close to the roof; starting to spray from one side to the other in order to keep the wet edge going until you get to the other side. I've seen Fonzi from DipYourCar.com -Plasti Dip For Your Car - Glossifier Blaze Pearlizer Metalizers Pro Car Kits Peel Coat do it, although he's using a spray system, not spray cans... but the concept should be the same. watch at 24:15 how he sprays the roof.
Thanks! Not too many people like the blue and think I should go black on the mirrors. Want to say I used about 4 cans then did 4 more of duplicolor clear coat. Always good to have extra paint. Going to paint the trunk next to make a full black glass roof look. Quick crummy mock up using Microsoft paint.
I say go for it! I think it looks good! And that's what I love about Plasti-dip, if you don't like it, you can always peel it off later without harming the paint. I'd recommend using the plasti-dip glossafier rather than a sprayable dupli-clear coat. See: not that there's anything wrong with using spray-can clear-coat, but it might make it more difficult to remove the plasti-dip later on, because the standard (non-flexable) clear coat on top of the plasti-dip black may make it harder to remove because standard clear-coat is more rigid and won't want to flex like the plasti-dip. The glossafier will stretch and flex along with the plasti-dip color coat underneath; making it easier to remove if you ever chose to do so. - Just keep that in mind if you do a large surface like the trunk or roof.
Working on the trunk. This neighborhood car decides to check out what I'm doing. Starting off with plastidip. Was way too gritty so wet sanded it. Started adding normal paint but a spot ripped. Started fresh with normal paint. Next car I'm getting a real paint setup. ... Had to rush this so car is still not all together.
I suppose you don't ever plan on removing that? Did the same on my 2008 Touring wheels. Never ever ever again will i use paint over the top of plastiDip. Stick with the various glossiers, metalizers and pearlizers... unless you plan on Never removing the plastiDip covered in paint. Just my 2 cents speaking from experience.
Yeah I'm cool with it being permanent. Had to clay bar the car due to over spray. All back together! Not sure If I like the white trunk handle part....... Didn't last a week. Was having my chassis brace welded in a friends house garage. Had the trunk open and as we jacked the car up it hit his garage door taking paint off the spoiler and leaving a noticeable scruff and scratch line on the trunk. Looks like I have to sand it and retry. Didn't give it a full week to cure is why it happened so easily. Should I make all of it black including the trunk latch? I like how all black would look like a solid piece of glass coming back from the roof.
It was an interesting concept but my opinion would be a tailgate and trim on the G2 as one color. The G3 can pull it off easier with two tone as their tailgate garnish runs the entire length of the tailgate. On yours.. it looks a bit out of place..like someone forgot to paint that trim on yours. IMO.. But its your car, do as you like you know!
Good point. Making it black would be a better effect. Thinking of shaving off the Toyota badge since I'll be painting over it.
If you do delete the emblem from the front or rear, plan on filling the emblem pin holes. @hobbit did the same on his Blog. Prius debadging attempt Hood logo Help with debadging | PriusChat
I'd paint the back panel piece black, and keep the emblem chrome to go with the chrome in the tail-lights -- but that's just me, I think either way it'll look good!
