    No bell is ringing. The ICE is regularly forced to turn, together with the electro. Of course there is no petrol used = like driving downhill. This is nesesary also to make the alternator run that regenerate the 12 V battery.

    There is an oil pump in the transmission that is engine driven. It has never been clear on the gen2 how critical this lubrication is as when in EV mode "standard fitting on all UK/EU Prius" this pump does not run. Since from what I have seen of the transmission all the bearings are roller or ball types surrounded or bathed in oil the pumps use is vague. It is however driven when the engine is spun by MG1.
    Walter your use of the term alternator "although strictly correct" is a little confusing as the Prius does not have a separate alternator and MG1 performs this operation but does not charge the 12 volt battery directly. The 12 volt is charged by a DC/DC converter off the HV battery.

    Hello ‘Electrified-hybrid friends,

    Well, I am not sure to have the right answer for you. Therefore I will transfer your request to my partner in crime with whom I made my system.
    Personally, I believe that this lubrication happens when the ICE is running once-in-a-while when in EV.
    Anyway, I am using it since 9 months and 9000 km / 6000 miles and nothing exploded (yet)!
    When driving in mixed mode, it is business as usual.

    I have no lubrication problems of that kind. In fact, no problem at all with anything.

    Thanks for sharing your project with us -- very cool. And excellent results with economy!

    One question: Why did you choose the 18650 batteries (AA in the USA)? Couldn't you have reduced the number of batteries by using D cells?

    Well, it is being said that small cylindrical cells are having a better power-to-weight ratio. It is remarkable to reach 16.5 kWh on 85 kg = ± 160 pounds. Isn't it? Moreover it all fits nicely under the floor of the thrunk.

    i wonder how they compare overall to the cells toyota uses in the pip, which take up half the car for 4.4 kWh.

    @bisco: I do not know the PIP too well. As it seems, we have Lithium cells in the PIP's sold in Europe, while in the US it is NicCad. In any case, it is understandable that Toyota must be conservative and cannot take the risc of adventuring a brand new type of cell. Imaging making a million cars with faulty cells.... My risk was personal. The car itself was only $ 9.000 worth and + $ 10.000 new parts gave me an EV (almost) for 19.000. If I would have failed dramaticcaly and the whole lot went into fire, I would have lost this $ 19.000, but the world would still continue to revolve 24 hrs/day. However, it did not happened, and I enjoy the car very much: it remains silent up to a speed of 118 km/h = almost 70 m/h; after that the ICE helps. But, my consumption remains very low.

    View attachment 82248 4000_km_Prius.JPG ► ► Today (check on my smartphone next to my car computer), I reached an absolute record: 1.3 L/100 km over 4.000 km (2.700 miles @ 300 mpg).

    No need to say that my converted Prius remains the cheapest car to drive.

    My next goal is 5.000 km @ 1L/100 km or less!
