I own a 2005 Prius with 233K miles. I got the terrible red triangle of death and several other warning lights. Had the codes checked out at Toyota and confirmed a bad HV battery. I am kinda handy and I replaced it myself. No big job, it took about two hours, most of which was spent removing the interior panels, etc. Test drove the car and all looked well. Thirty or so miles later, BAMMM, lots of warning lights. At this point I took it to my mechanic to have it checked out. They found nothing you wouldn't expect when you've disconnected the two batteries. They cleared the codes and off I went.
Again about thirty miles out the lights went on again. Back to the garage once again. What they found was a corroded connector running to the fan, located under the rain gutter of the hatch, passenger side. Hmmm, how'd that get corroded?? Two years ago I remember drain the sump where the spare's located of 6 inches of water, how'd that get in there??? My mechanic confirmed he has seen that before in the Prius.
So now I am wondering, did the initial battery fail because the fan may have failed??? Perhaps we need a warning light for a $100 fix instead of a $2000+ fix!!!
Moral of the story: Check the fan circuit. At least check the connectors.

At your year and mileage, it would be reasonable to assume the failure is the battery. On a newer car with far less miles, then we can think it might be the connector and not the battery

Though it's too much trouble for most people, I monitor the fan speed, as well as a lot more. Here is a picture of the IPad app I have running all the time. I also use Waze for navigation (IPad) and switch from app to app. It's strapped to my center console just aft of the shifter.

"C Fan O" the round dial at 36% is the battery fan.

I apologize to the OP for high jacking his thread, BUT I have a question for you.

What PID are you using for the Hybrid Battery Pack Remaining Life? I have Engine Link and monitor all of the PID's in your display except this one.

Locate the cracks in the hatch channels, clean with rubbing alcohol or the like, and fill with clear windshield silicone or whatever you feel will do a decent job of waterproofing. See posts 49,50,54 and 59 of this thread for pics of the suspect areas/cracks:

I agree with JC, your HV battery died of old age after a pretty stellar (typical) run. Perhaps the fan contributed to a somewhat "premature" death but at that age and mileage, it would be tough to prove it. More excellent detective work locating the corroded connector. This is beginning to surface as an area to keep an eye on for aging gen 2's, especially those with fresh water pools in the passenger compartments.

Did you replace with a Toyota factory battery, and if you did do you mind naming the dealer and how much you paid?

I agree the car owes me nothing. I bought it in 2009 with 95k for $10K. Hasn't cost me a dime since. The battery was from Dorman, rebuilt for $1400 plus ~$1000 core deposit. I'd buy another Prius in a heartbeat.

It's 015B in the A_Standard_PID_US.csv. It's the same as SoC in another list, just goes by a different title.

OK thanks. I display it as SOC.

SOC is a more accurate description as State of Charge and not remaining battery life. Of course I am sure you already know this.

Bobert, my daughters prius has the same symptoms. It started about a month ago. Her prius would have condensation on the inside of the windows and windshield and now he red car slash shows up on console. It drives fine. So i take it to our dealer and they say cooling system has craped put aNd it will be 4600 to replace batteries and cooling fan. On top of that the dash lights and speedo has been out for about 6 months. They say no warrantee on that either so another 894.000 so grand total. 5500.00. They are freakin nuts. They put new batteries in it 3 years ago. This is ridiculous. Granted it has 245k and is a 2005 model. But i told them hell no im coming to get it "Well sir that will be 49.95 diagnosis fee. Best 50 bucks i ever spent to get it away from those AHose.

Ohh sorry guys the question is can i let my daughter drive it without the batteries supposedly getting charged? It Drives fine and it shows the batteries are working on the dash energy monitor. It just has the red car slash warning kindof of to the side of the monitor.
