Reading Codes on 1998 Gen1 Prius?

    I talked to a guy from the Battery Clinic who have lots of experience on Prius, He told me it is very hard to find a code scanner for these cars, as they are not OBD2? Can anyone please shed some light on it?
    I have a basic Autel MaxiScan (OBDII/EOBD) scanner, it plugs into the port but it won't read the codes.

    I'm getting a warning triangle beside the speedo and a red car and arrow through the middle icon on the bigger screen.
    The battery has very little capacity - charges up and down very quickly.
    After a drive I get an oil warning light occasionally too.
    And my shift selector doesn't engage the parking pawl.

    Any help gratefully received.

    So, presumably, you have checked the oil and topped up as necessary?

    What does the OBD (onboard diagnostic) port look like? Any chance of a photo?

    You have what Kiwi refers to as a Gen 0 (zero) as these cars were never officially released outside the JDM (Japanese domestic market). The Gen I was manufactured from 2001 - 2003

    Where abouts in NZ are you? Auckland?

    Hi Dolj,
    I'm in the Nelson region.
    Hmm.. Gen 0... That explains why so many forums on the Gen 1 didn't make sense.

    Yes, the engine oil was about 6mm high above the full mark on the dipstick - perhaps it expands when hot and goes over a max level limit?

    Are there any other oil locations that would set off an oil warning on the dash?

    Oh, I was thinking it was low.

    I don't know if the Gen 0 is the same, but other Gens don't like the oil high. I'd try and remove some, so it was at the high mark or maybe a mm or 2 below.

    I'm not at all familiar with the Gen 0, so can't answer your the questions.

    Not only hard to find - impossible. The original NHW10 Prius sold only in Japan used a diagnostic system that does not comply with industry standards.
