Ran perfect over several trips in a week. Then last night Sarah pulled from stop sign and red triangle and vsc lights came on, gas engine died, no accelerator at all, and she had just enough momentum to coast off the road again.

Today red triangle only was on, ran perfect. Took to friend at auto shop. codes identical to the last time that were in his system:

    C1300 antilock brake system
    POAOF engine failed to start

It is running fine again. I am supposed to drive 100 miles to Dallas to get a friend at the airport in the morning, but I don't think I should trust it.

Not sure how to proceed on this shut down while driving issue.

You are correct that the car cannot be trusted, given your description of drivability issues. bisco already suggested that you need to get Mini VCI and he is correct.

C1300 means that the skid control ECU needs to be replaced. I would not do this without confirming this code was logged using Mini VCI.

P0A0F: how much fuel is in the tank? How many bars does the fuel gauge read?

    Hi and thanks.

He has an 07 prius also and had warned me to refill at half a tank which I have done since. It was well above half on gauge when it had the trouble last night. I filled it up this afternoon and could only get 4 gallons in.

BUT the first of the 3 incidents we've had started with it being almost out of gas and has now repeated twice in the last few weeks even though we've kept it half or above. But I wonder if the low gas somehow initiated the trouble.

I ordered mini vci within hours of bisco telling me. I ordered a 64 bit version hoping it will work on my windows 10. Waiting for it. I do have windows 7 64 bit if needed.

Got an obdc II reader for Torque on android but it said no codes so I am going to return it.

My friend used a professional shop reading system to read the codes. He also read the codes after first incident. It was still logged in his system which tracks by customer and vehicle and showed that these 2 codes also happened May 15 and then today June 4. So I am pretty confident about the C1300 code. He went ahead and erased the codes in the car since they are in his system and I wrote them down.

I drove it home 35 miles this afternoon, ran perfect again.

Could the C1300 cause the shutdown and justify replacing it? In other words, can the C1300 code thrown when the car shuts down be trusted?

The low fuel situation would not necessarily cause this problem unless some adverse action was performed, like a botched jumpstart attempt.

It sounds like your car potentially has two electrical issues:

C1300 points to the skid control ECU having failed but would not cause the engine to shut down. You ask whether this can be trusted - that is hard to say. It might be necessary to replace the skid control ECU to see if that helps or not.

P0A0F, if the car does not have a low fuel level, potentially points to a failed engine ECU.

It is very unusual for any ECU to fail, let alone for one car to have two such failures at the same time. Has the car suffered any accident or flood damage in the past? A bad wiring harness connection might cause these weird issues.

That is very clear, thank you.

I am the third owner. Shows no accidents or floods on record and appears very clean, well-maintained and mechanically sound.

Gen 2 07 Prius engine shuts down at stop and while driving

This morning I realized that there is a pattern to the Prius incidents. What Sarah experience last week is the same that Amy experienced when she drove the car the first day we bought it.

    1. January: Amy had driven 20 highway miles with no problem. Park for 10 minutes. Started and crossed to the median of a two-lane Highway. stopped to wait. When tried to go, nothing. Will not move. 10 minutes later tried again and car worked fine for a long time after that.

1a. The car still had the original auxiliary battery. tested and found 12V battery weak. Replaced original battery with Duracell AGM vented battery for Prius. Car drove fine for weeks after this.

    2. May: car sat all day. Turn on. Drove across parking lot. then noticed red triangle, VSC, brake warning lights all on. Lots of codes including high-voltage battery, transmission, and others.

    3. drove fine for one week. Then going 60 miles per hour up a slight hill. heard the internal combustion engine shutdown. Red triangle, VSC, brake warning light came on. Reduced or no power steering or brakes. Coasted off the road. After 10 minutes, it drove fine again.

3a. I cleaned high voltage battery cooling fan. Drove fine for 10 days.

    4. June: Sarah drove 10 minutes. Drove to stop sign. Had to wait 5 minutes for lots of traffic. When ready to pull out, push the accelerator, internal combustion engine shut down and the car would not move. Would not go into reverse. Put in neutral, and enough slope to roll backward to side of road. waited a few minutes, and it drove fine again.
codes WERE P0A0F engine failed to start and c1300 anti-lock brake. the same codes were thrown in the previous incident. Noticed engine coolant a little low and added more.

Sam, Why did you hijack the thread I started? Someone even took their time to explain to you how to start one. Go to the forum for your car, and click start new thread.

These threads can be a resource for someone with specific problems and they are permanent records. I want to write them so they are concise, clear, and helpful.

I have more understanding of my symptoms, so I am going to start a new thread. It is
