When I'm not in the car and I don't have the phone plugged in to be charged, can I just leave the cord in the power outlet / cigarette lighter input without it draining the power? or any other cord for that matter?

The outlet is not powered when car is shutdown, so it should be OK.

I leave my GPS plugged in, turns off with the car. But I think it still may use a little juice, not sure though.

With the outlet de-powered -- a necessity these days, with all the battery-killing appliances customers have plugged in -- the GPS can pull that little bit of juice only from its own internal battery, not from the car's 12V battery.

FYI- I started to have problems all of a sudden a day or so ago with the 2 cords I leave in the car all the time plugged into a 12v cigarette usb adapter. To make a long story short, I traced the problem to the cords themselves. The end that plugs into the phone was corroded on both cables. They had been setting in a little bit of salt water left behind in the passenger foot area. The water had been left there from people getting in the car with melted snow and salt on their shoes. After replacing the cables, all is working well again. Now we are careful to make sure the ends of the cables are safely tucked away off the floor area.

I don’t understand how the iPhone charge cord can be the problem if there is no power to the 12v power port with the car in the off position. Are you sure you’re not talking about the USB port?

There doesn't need to be power to the cord for the corrosion to occur if the cord's unprotected end is setting in water.

So there's not a problem with your cord draining the battery? That's the subject of this thread.

I have a 4-port USB splitter plugged into my front 12V outlet. My phone charging cable has been plugged into it for two years. As others said, it turns off when you turn off the car.

Not talking about corrosion. Talking about power outlet being disabled when car is in off position. There is no power to the outlet so how could a corroded cord drain the battery?

Oops, it looks like I posted to the wrong thread. I was looking for one about problems with charging the phone battery.
