I have a 2004 Prius with 130,000 miles. I have the following error codes: C1259, C1310, P3019. I've taken the battery out and tested each cell has a voltage of 8.00 to 8.05 volts - higher than I've ever seen before. I'm seeing the classic symptoms of a dead cell - read triangle, VSC error. When I'm driving, the battery seems to isolate, and the engine works very hard to move the car at all, but I will have 4-5 bars on my battery display. From what I've read, this all points to a dead module. Could it be a bad connection to one of the modules? Or a failing control computer module? How would you clean the connections to the battery?

Heard one fellow found corrosion on connects...solved his problems and didnt replace any modules. Think I saw it on Youtube.

also clean your battery fan for gunk as that can contribute to throwing a code if clogged up. Also note the brake actuator problem can throw some lights but that should include some of the brake related lights maybe VSC. Extended warranty on that if you have it..see threads.

you need mini vci and load test.

it is an obd connector between your windows laptop and the car. it contains toyota tech stream software and can read the voltages while you drive. another method is to put light bulbs on the cells to load them.

yes, the load identifies the bad cell. if you want some learning, there are quite a few threads here on diagnosing and repairing hybrid batteries.

Okay then...My mistake. I just googled "corrosion on hybrid battery" and several sites pop up on it.

I can't find a good forum that talks about how to used a load test (battery) to determine the dead battery. I've cleaned all my copper terminals on the bus bar - so I think I'm in good shape there, but I would like to determine the bad cell before I put it back together.

let me see what i can help guide you.

    1) go to the forums page

    2)go to gen 2 forums

    3) go to tech discussion

    4) look for hybrid battery threads. the first good one i see is by member 'ryousideways' gen II prius individual battery module replacement.

The common method is to hookup a standard car highbeam headlight bulb to each individual module for two minutes; noting both beginning and ending voltage. Not exactly a how-to but this is what I did: My P0A080 fault code and battery rebuild | PriusChat

I cleaned the copper terminals using vinagar/ salt solution for a couple of hours and then neutralized with baking soda/ water. I went ahead and put the battery back in - so far so good. I also purchased the mini-VCI so I can read the voltages coming out of the batter - waiting for that to arrive.
Has anyone had experience with a Prolong Battery System after they have had the Red Triangle of Death - and then replaced a cell or two?

There is a guy on youtube...points out that corrosion builds on negative teminals...but either way seems that was a problem for one guy-resistance from corrosion set off his computer...dealer wanted to replace his hybrid batt but he opened it up hisself and saw the corrosion. Says he was good after a simple cleaning?
