Yes, you could change the PCV valve but that has no impact on the pinging.

The engine oil probably is being burnt if there are no leaks. It could be leaking into the combustion chambers via the valve stems, or the piston rings.

Since you know that the engine is consuming oil at a rapid rate, rather than overhaul the cylinder head, I would suggest that you just buy a used engine and have it installed. The cylinder head may not be the only problem - if the pistons are worn or the crankshaft bearings are bad, your engine will continue to have problems.

 

You can actually use lower octaner at Higher altitudes. It has more to do with the engine having to work harder on inclines.
The knocking (which is what it sounds like) might be caused by bad spark plugs (when last replaced?), bad ignition coils (pull them and check for cracks in them, easy to do ) Coil boots bad, water inside the coil boots. Much much less likely is timing chain. They are not supposed to wear out.

 

I've heard the pinging under load in these engines too, its not that bad in the few I've listened to, but there.

I've also noticed that the amount of pinging a driver reports has more to do with their preferred radio volume level or hearing ability rather than having a lemon prius compared to all the rest!!

A pinging engine is sometimes caused by the engine being overheated or poorly maintained. Poorly meaning coolant never changed or low and poor quality oil or clogged rad.I would get a Xgauge and monitor the engine temps when it is pinging. In this car you will never know if the engine is overheating until its to late as there is no temp gauge.

If its pinging so loud that spark retard does not help it then its out of the range of the sensor or the retard is engaged and you still have pinging which is very bad as eventually engine damage will ensue.. You will know if its retarded as acceleration is poor like the battery is low.

If pinging bad try replacing the sensor. Its pretty easy its right behind the intake manifold up against cylinder wall #2

Thanks. Lots of reports about G2's pinging but no resolution. I have never heard pinging in my 07 no matter what gas I use.
Been using gas that has no ethanol for quite a long time. Its 87 octane and about 30 cents more a gallon. Its at a new to Florida chain 7-11 type store called WaWa. I heard there big up north. But not using it to fix anything as I have never heard pinging.
