I am trying to decide between two tires: Michelin Defender or Premier A/S. I drive mostly local and live in state which has snow at times during the winter. I would like to get everything in one tire: low noise, good traction in snow/rain/ and good mpg. My husband says a tire is a tire!! I want some inputs. Please note: I am only interested in these two tires due to a discounted deal I am getting from Michelin. I drive a 2008 and have 72,000 + miles.

I would take a look at the Nokian WRg3 in spite of a somewhat higher cost. They will give good MPG, Are great in snow/ice, and are usable for about 55k miles year around.

Thank you for your responses! However, I am under a warranty issue with Michelin and I need to decide between the Premier A/S or the Defender. I have to stick with Michelin for the time being. I am leaning towards the Premier A/S at the moment.

That would be my choice between the 2 as well.

    Come one people....

She doesn't want OTHER brand recommendations.- Very specific between 2 tires.

Given the description of what you seem to be valuing most in a tire, I would lean towards the one that is sold by Michelin themselves as being the more "All-Season" choice. That would be the Premier A/S.

I disagree with your husband that "A tire is a tire"....there are differences in quality, design aim, and performance. BUT....I would say both those tires are good, and you wouldn't of made a huge mistake with either. Depending on what you have on your vehicle now, you might take a MPG hit with either.

Since you only have 72,000 miles on a 2008 vehicle, I don't know how much you would really be benefiting from the "long life" and tire wear durability, which seem to be the primary selling points of The Defender.

AH, THANK YOU...Electric Me!! I appreciate your input.

Others mean well and love their tires!! I do appreciate their inputs as well and other's might benefit to their suggestions.

I am going to go with the Premiers A/S and I will let you know how I make out.

PS: I disagree with my hubby too..but still love him!

Of the two, I think it's your better choice.
My only concern would be it's not sold as being a low rolling resistance tire, so you might take a MPG hit.

But good luck, and yes, let us know how you like them or not.

Now I'm going to feel bad if you end up hating them.

TireRack lists them as LRR, but the term has such a wide gamut it's really something you need to verify through user's experience. Here's a thread, OP started replaced his OEM Primacy's with Premier A/S, eventually swapped back to Primacy. It's in 215/45R17 size though. Tire choices can be maddening, that's all I know with certainty, lol.

Thanks, I got from the very cursory, quick google search that I did, that the Defenders seemed to be advanced as being "fuel efficient" while the Premier A/S was marketed as being obviously...."All-Season"...so my recommendation was weighted towards the A/S because the OP seemed to want "Everything" in a tire.

I will admit however, I have no experience with either tire.

I do have experience many years back with Michelin, and I found them to be spendy tires, but VERY good. This was however decades back, and with a set of Michelins on a truck...not a Prius. But my feeling is Michelin makes good tires. So you can't really go too wrong.

Michelin Canada used to grade the tires for "fuel efficiency". I believe they had the Premiers at 9 (out of 10, 10 being best), and the Defenders at 8. It seems pretty loose all-in-all though.

Thank you ALL...it does get a bit crazy when you have TOO much information, TOO many choices!! I'll see for myself. It is not the end of the world but would be nice to have that MPG since that is why we have these cars, eh? :)

I want to update my post here. I purchased the michelin premiers A/S. I am very happy with my decision. The tires felt very smoothly and I noticed 4-5 mpg increase! I like how they handle the road and rain so far. I am thinking of increasing the air in them. Right now, I have them at 35/33 as stated on the car door. Any suggestions what I can safely inflate to?

I have about 10,000 miles on my Premiers and I love them. Go with the tire pressure recommended for your car posted on the door frame. Higher pressure will give you a rougher ride and you won't gain much in fuel mileage.

That's a very solid improvement, doubly so with new tires; what were the tires on there before?
