Toyota recalls 482,000 Prius and Lexus vehicles for safety issue

    Per the recall notice (NHTSA Recall No. 16V-487) I received about a week ago:
    "Any authorized Toyota dealer will install retention brackets on the curtain shield air bag inflators at NO CHARGE. These retention brackets are designed to prevent the inflator chambers from entering the vehicle if separation occurs."

    The notice also said to schedule an appt. as soon as possible with a dealer, so I'm guessing the parts are available.

    I am still waiting for my notice to bring my Prius and Sienna in for the airbags. I just got a letter saying that my autos have a problem and to wait for a notice to bring them in. The notice was 4 months ago.

    Got my second "we're ready now" air bag notice, about a week back. Scheduled to be done this Wednesday. Several other Canadian owners have posted about getting second notice, including Tideland?

    Probably a staggered roll out.

    ...and Toyota continues to install crappy, defective, dangerous Takata airbags in all their vehicles. I got the recall notice for my 2016 recently.

    Which will kill us first... the collision, or the air bag going off.

    My air bag recall service was done a week ago. I never got the second notice. I called them 2 weeks back and asked when they might be ready. The service tech said they had been doing these for a couple weeks and parts had been in stock. It took them 1.75 hours total time and they also checked the EGR valve (another recall).

    The article I posted a couple days ago, quoted Toyota as saying "We don't want to destroy Takata, so we continue to partner with them." Don't recall the exact words. But it also does say Toyota may consider using replacement parts from other companies.

    What's wrong with this picture... Going to the dealer and having them tear out my Takata airbag, and/or Takata airbag parts, and then replace those same parts with possibly more defective Takata components? Replacement airbags in Nissan were also found to be defective.

    I wish I could permanently disable/disconnect all the air bags in my car.

    The side curtain airbag recall does not replace the possibly defective air bags with another air bag. The recall has the service tech install a barrier to hopefully prevent the canister pieces from becoming shrapnel when it deploys.

    My recall is for the passenger seat airbag. Down by the legs somewhere? Beside the seat?
    But in my opinion, every part is questionable… Not just the bag itself, but every part and component that goes with it.

    Well it took them 2 and a half hours to complete, there was no visible damage to the cars interiour aside from the colored rubber moulding around the door looked like it was slightly stretched. That's it, thank god.

    This seems to be the procedure (turned up in a Google search for that $5 bracket kit part number).

    Can double as a decent set of instructions on how the headliner comes out (even though they don't take it out in the procedure, but only loose enough to work at the edges).

    Page 4 of that procedure PDF has a table of affected VIN ranges; you could see if your VIN is in one of those. (You might notice the WMI+VDS columns account for the first 8 VIN positions and the VIS is the last 8, and there's one position in between that the table doesn't care about; don't let that throw you.)

    The note suggests that you're definitely not affected if no range in that table includes your VIN, but even if one does, there's still a chance you're not affected (it refers to a more specific "attached VIN list" that's not included in this PDF).

    Mine was done, I did not check the entire interior of the car but no visible damage. It took two hours including a complementary car wash.

    Technically, the inflator is sealed and pressure can build up from heat and crack it just from sitting, presumably with the windows up, baking the interior of the car. Doesn't have to do with deployment at all. They say it is more likely to happen to cars that aren't driven.

    You're both right. It's not an *intentional* deployment, but apparently it does at least partially inflate the airbag when it fails. Along with sending pieces of the inflator into the cabin, possibly injuring somebody (if you have a habit of sitting in your car, parked in the sun, for several hours, on a hot summer day).
