Radar emblem

    I just had $12000 repair on my front end from a crash in my Prime and took note of the price of all the parts. I'm just thinking about all the times I've been in a tight parking space and people have backed into me trying to get out or vice versa. I imagine it wouldn't take much of a bump to brake that again.

    Hopefully the emblem (which I am guessing it plastic) is separate from the radar components behind it, so that in a minor parking lot hit only the emblem has to be replaced in case that is all that was broken, hopefully at a much cheaper parts and labor cost than replacing the entire sensor. It may show up as one unit on your invoice but that could be that the invoice is showing the kit since in your case they both had to be replaced.

    Ahh. It's fixed? Do you mind posting the prices of the parts for future reference? (either as a sticky or in the knowledge base forum).

    I've been fortunate enough that all my hit & runs were done to the rear bumper (front bumper has radar and 2 sonar sensors on the 2010).

    Technically, the radar is situated a few inches behind the emblem so the plastic bumper can be fixed at the cost of a plastic bumper. But I agree, I prefer the windshield-mounted systems on some of the other manufacturers (like Subaru) but they use lidar instead of radar. Radar can be used in a wider range of situations.

    It's most definitely separate. Here's my PiP while getting its front bumper painted (part of the negotiation for buying the car was a respray of the front bumper to get rid of scratches made by the previous owner).
    You can see the radar "box" sitting right there in the middle. The Toyota-emblem is just a protection for it, not part of the assembly.

    Did that price include the electronics BEHIND the emblem ? I suspect not.

    Here are the parts lists for the repair on my 30 mph crashed front end. Notice the cost of the "emblem" and the headlights. Kinda scary.

    Really? US$481.90?!?! No wonder you were asking about it! :confused:


    For those that are wondering about the 3 parts of the bumper, they add up to about $1,000.

    Left and right side without ICS = $223.04 each
    Grille (acrylic part) without ICS = $550.18
    Total bumper cost = US$996.26 (plus US$280.50 for labour/paint)

    LED headlamps = US$1,635.90 each (They used to be US$5,000 each on the LS600h L, 10 years ago)

    Active grille shutter assembly = US$287.90

    I have to ask how you got your front end smashed...did your Front Collision Mitigation system fail to act?

    Like most advances, they will have their setbacks. But they keep getting better & better. Here's a picture of the 3 sensors that our Tesla uses to look forward - located behind the windshield heating elements up high near the rear view mirror, looking out (as do the other cameras & sensors all around the car.

    You have 3 devices all cross checking each other .... radar, laser, & camera, checking to make sure they see the same obstacles - & truly seeing what they are supposed to. This technology allows people to take their hands (lightly) off the wheel & their foot off the brake & gas & let the car drive itself in many circumstances.
    Philosophically we can ask "does this really make things better? ... especially if a technology has a glitch here & there on occasion?" There's no doubt that many drivers will get lazy & depend on technology too much, & yes, something may go wrong. Often, regulations & improvements are written in the blood of those who went before us.

    I've had it work a couple of weeks ago.
    (keep in mind that this is rural Norway, one lane in both directions, narrow roads and yield signs instead of traffic lights)
    I was pulling up to a cross-roads that has a quite sharp right turn right before you actually get to the waiting line by the yield-sign. A couple of cars sat in the left lane already, waiting for the coast to be clear so they could turn left. I was going right, and had no cars in front of me (or from the left), so didn't let off the gas that much. As I turned right and passed the waiting cars that sat in the left lane, I was too close to the back one's rear end for the radar not to care. So the system beeped loudly, I got a huge exclamation mark in the dash-screen for a brief second and the car halted slightly. Not completely, but enough to scare the bejeezes out of me.

    I had a few BRAKE! warnings pop up on me when I was passing a stopped vehicle that was trying to make left across a double yellow line (happens all the time), so I know that warnings were working. I was wondering if the car would actually break "under certain conditions" (whatever that means) and come to a stop by itself. Not going to test that theory, but maybe others had a few close calls and were saved by the big brother, who is always watching :)

    I am so glad I have full coverage with GAP so if some ding dong hits my Prime, I just order another one.... I actually hope for a total as they are never the same once the body shop tries to fix them.
