Looks like you're referring to the EGR sub assembly correct?

I think you guys are on to something here about just replacing the whole unit - EGR valve and radiator/heat exchanger. I believe this is why people who have cleaned the IM, throttle body, and EGR pipe continue to have problems. The radiator part is supposed to cool the exhaust gases enough that when added to the normal intake charge you get better mpg and reduced emissions. BUT if the radiator is all carboned up where the exhaust flows through it, less heat from the exhaust will be absorbed by the radiator, then when the EGR valve opens all four cylinders (instead of one) get a nice blast of hot exhaust which results in pinging which then the ECU pulls timing and you get reduced power.

My other hypothesis is that the shuddering/shaking/vibration is caused by a resonance caused by the ECU trying to crack the EGR valve when conditions demand, but then having to close the valve and pull timing when the knock starts. Then the whole process repeats itself. Whew! What do you guys think?

I'd say clean all the oil out of throttle body that would cause vapor lock

All I can think is if the radiator component is almost completely carbon clogged, it can't be behaving within spec.

LOL, you don't know what vapor lock is, do you?

Usually this is related to the egr, the egr in the prius is a little different and causes carbon build-up. sometimes in the valve its self or the intake manifold.

    Bob,

Did you ever solve the problem? Did your car happen to vibrate badly at idle when the car is first started?
