Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    Using 5-5.5 krpm on the Ioniq as a stopping point, it looks like:
    • 1st gear - Ioniq
    • 2nd gear - Prius catches up, no engine pause
    • 3d gear - Prius continues to advance
    • 4th gear and above - the Ioniq has too high of a ratio and the Prius continues to accelerate
    This was my first look so I welcome other analysis.

    It also could be different in the automatic mode because the computer selects the best point to shift rather than the driver.

    Either way an interesting video. I would love to see them race a predefined circuit to see how each performs time wise. I feel the ioniq would do a better job since the gears can be selected to maximize power coming out of turns.

    It is more powerful, but gearing, weight, tires, etc. also play a part in a timed run.

    All good and interesting points .... if you are solely interested in performance.

    I'm still unable to get past the looks of the Prius, so performance in not that important. In truth, I'm beyond the Ioniq as well.
    My comment was solely an opinion after looking at an SEL in a showroom.

    But the Prius can get the engine RPM up pretty quickly itself, so I wouldn't be so sure that that's necessary...

    With Toyota's more powerful MG setup - it actually surprised me that Ioniq got the hole-shot.

    Ok, I went back and looked at this YouTube on a frame-by-frame basis:

    • Used "," to back up one frame and "." to step forward a frame
    • Used Ioniq engine rpm, local rpm minimum and maximums as measuring points
    So this is what the graphs look like:

    The problem appears the Ioniq was a little lethargic in the last gear shift. Note that the Ioniq starts with the engine at 1,000 rpm whereas the Prius engine may be off. A better start might be to hold the cars with the brake, floor the accelerator so both engines are spinning, and release the brake to launch. Alternatively, re-run the launch with the Ioniq engine in 'auto-OFF.' Finally, run the 2017 Level 2 ECO versus the 2017 Ioniq Blue . . . grasshopper vs grasshopper.

    0 to 60 mph appears to be just under 10.2 seconds ... kind of underwhelming considering that even our old '04 Prius managed a 9.8 second time by Road & Track iirc. Our Leaf is in the same mediocre acceleration category. It's like watching 3-toed sloths race .... gotta be patient.

    A slow car isn't necessarily a bad thing. It imposes needed discipline by requiring allowing lots of room. Said as one who witnessed the chopper medivac of someone who didn't and got t-boned last Sunday. Cut out of a burning car. Died on Monday.

    I went from a Porsche to a Prius v which is a pretty radical change. After 4+ years, the pause and reconsider has hopefully become second nature. I haven't been in a situation where I needed more acceleration than the v's mediocre amount.

    Upon further reflection, it made sense to do a second-by-second sampling:

    Prius top speed, 188 kph, which allowed the Ioniq to catch up. The Ioniq 4th gear is too tall which slowed it up. Even the Inoiq 3d gear looks tall and/or the Ioniq engine is running out of torque.

    The initial chart sampled at the local minimum/maximum Ioniq rpm with linear interpretation between the points:

    Fourth through sixth gears on the Ioniq are overdrives. That last shift is likely into 6th, and when not being pushed, the car will likely shift into it at 45mph or so. The car could skip 2nd and even 3rd when under hard acceleration from a stop, or just have shifted quickly enough to not to be noticed. I know it isn't like to like, but the Sonic can move in to 4th as early as 20mph.

    Considering the transmission software is likely programed for keeping fuel economy up, the Ioniq should do better using manual mode to keep it out of 6th or even 5th.

    I don't think so, actually - note that it seems to land at right about 4000 RPM after every shift, indicating well-spaced ratios (at least for consistent shiftpoints, if not optimum acceleration - in an optimum acceleration configuration, the shifts get closer as you get higher up the box).

    Ioniq Hybrid gear ratios, for at least the European model:

    That dual final drive thing is actually pretty common on DCTs and 6-speed manuals, helps make things more compact.

    In any case, it's about 2 meters per revolution of the tires with the Ioniq's stock tire size (well, I've got 1.9933 m, but 2 m is probably close enough).

    0.956 * 3.045 = 2.911
    4500 rpm engine / 2.911 = 1546 rpm wheels
    1546 * 2 * 60 / 1000 = 185.5 km/h

    Basically, it was in 5th, I think it just ran into its speed limiter.

    Edit: However, it looks like the system wasn't even allowing it to get to the 5700 RPM horsepower peak...

    Understand I was trying to read the Ioniq rpm from the dial as captured by YouTube. I could not see the fine divisions so I would give +/-100 rpm on any of the readings. Feel free to spot check (see below).

    I presume the discussion is all based on the side by side images of the speedometer?
    If my understanding is correct, there is no way to improve the Prius performance with manual manipulation .....
    whereas, the Ioniq DCT can be manually shifted,(as Trollbait says) (forget fuel efficiency) holding each gear until the point of peak performance.

    I don't suppose we will know for sure until someone drives the Ioniq in performance mode.
    Also, remember the article about the Ioniq setting a land speed record (I think the speed limiter was removed)

    I well recall in 1955 when the new Chevy V8 was widely acclaimed because it would 0-60 mph in 10 second flat!
