Will a 12v standard Duracell "51" battery work just as well as the AGM type "51"? The standard battery is half the price.

yes, if it's the drop in replacement from batteries plus bulbs.

make sure it has the same dimensions, correct post size on the correct side of the battery, and the vent tube connection.

How much are your passengers worth?

The external venting prevents explosive hydrogen gas from building up in the passenger compartment. AGM minimizes sulpheric acid in case of rupture.

Do it right. Order the 51-440BAGM Bosch Battery from PepBoys online for $133, go down to the store and pick it up same day. Or even have them install it for free - but make sure they connect the vent tube.

Thanks to all for the quick answers. I realize the importance of the vent feature and thanks to Navy for the PepBoys source. That's half the price that Batteries and Bulbs quoted.

That's what goes into my Bimmer. Either BMW or Bosch battery to save a little. For Toyota, I'd go for Toyota or Bosch.

I guess it's time for me to change a new battery too because my interior lights dimmed the moment I turned off the car. I have a bad feeling about that.

They'll always dim a little. When you turn the car off, the system voltage drops from about 13.8 down to the battery's own voltage, which is only about 12.7 at best. That's about an 8% difference, but light output goes by volts squared, so they'll dim by about 16%, under perfectly normal circumstances.
