Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Not bad. Oily, and some alarming gritty bits, from the EGR? The small passages on the perimeter of each exit port are from EGR? Running brake-cleaner soaked Que-Tips down those always hit pay dirt. I ran pipe cleaners through everything they could reach, and attached cloth strips to a grab-it tool, started them into passages, hit with brake cleaner, then continued inwards. Also just a fair amount of spraying.

    Reused all gaskets, removed and carefully cleaned first. Also cleaned intake ports on the engine, with rag wrapped fingers, with a bit of brake cleaner spray, just applied to the cloth, not direct spray. Was careful not to dirty the injectors.

    The MAP sensor just below the throttle body was just completely oily. Soaked it in isopropyl and blew it dry.

    It makes me wonder if hitting the "ventilation case" with brake cleaner would help maintain the PCV system - something I haven't done yet. The "ventilation case" is that labyrinth of metal channels before the PCV valve designed to capture oil mist and put it back into the sump.

    Maybe best to do right before an oil change. I'll snap some photos.

    I took all the bolts off it, but it was glued on really solid, and I was reluctant to pry it off, break the bead of whatever it is that's sealing. Some sort of "form a gasket".

    Maybe should have.

    It's grey rtv that is holding it on. Pry it off with a screw driver. I recommend leaving it alone, nothing to really clean in there.

    Ah man, I had some of that. Honda valve covers call for small dabs at two junctions. Tho as you say, best left alone.

    So is it necessary to remove the intake as pictured to install the OCC? I was trying to understand exactly were the tubes attached to and from the OCC. I have 85k miles on my wife's 2010 Prius and haven't had any oil burning issues as of yet or start up/idle issue but I would like to install an OCC to help. I just want to know exactly where to make the connections. Thanks.

    There's a U-shaped hose between the PCV valve (on engine block below intake manifold) and a port on the driver's side of intake manifold. That's what you want to splice the OCC into.

    It's pretty much necessity to remove the air box, throttle body, EGR pipe and intake manifold. You don't need to disconnect coolant lines from throttle body: it can be pulled off the intake manifold and tied off, out of the way.

    I opted to disconnect the U-shaped hose from PCV valve, push a 3/8" brass barb splice on, and connect the OCC hoses, one to that barb splice, the other to the PCV valve. Basically splicing it in, in series.

    You should definitely clean the manifold while it's off. Disconnect and remove the attached MAP sensor first. It's just below the throttle body. I soaked it's sensor in isopropyl alcohol, but MAF cleaner spray is likely better.

    FWIW, I mounted my OCC with a bracket atop the cross beam at front/bottom of engine may, only accessible from below.

    After looking through this thread again I have a better idea of what is going on. Are there more details on how to clean out the EGR valve and tubing? I've not seen any pictures about these parts and where they are. I'm going to do this OCC on my wife's 2010 Prius when she is gone for 2 weeks on vacation with her sisters. Now I just need to figure out which OCC to buy.

    There's a pinned thread on maintenance sub-forum with @NutzAboutBolts videos, one specific to EGR removal and cleaning, and several others that tie in. And another for intake manifold cleaning.

    He uses brake cleaner in an aerosol can. I used that also, but especially with the EGR cooler it wasn't doing that well, and at a suggestion from @mjoo I tried OxyClean solution soak, with excellent results. The cooler is stainless, impervious to the somewhat caustic Oxy, but I'd be careful with aluminium parts.

    Was the 3D printed mount files for the oil catch can uploaded to 3DHubs, ThinkVerse, or on this thread ???

    Trying to understand how this oil catch can is installed on the Prius.
    Still confused on how are all the connections, its obvious to other but not for those who are not mechanically inclined.

    If by any chance you have more pictures or video, it would be greatly appreciated ???

    I just created the file in fusion 360 and used cura to print it on my 3d printer. I used PLA and it has sagged a bit from the engine heat but still works. I do not have a thingiverse account yet.

    I've mount mine with bracket off the front of engine bay cross beam, reachable from above of the air box is removed, but mainly from below, during oil changes.

    The bracket is currently held with solidly clamping bolts/nuts/washers, but I'm hearing odd sounds when raising the front with floor jack on the front/central jacking point, on the underside of that beam. So, I'm going to put rubber washers in the interface, with locking nuts, with an upcoming oil change.

    As to the plumbing, where you connect, it's in series along the hose from PCV valve to intake manifold. I opted to cut that hose at the middle, rotate both ends to point down, splice into the OCC hoses.

    The two hose ends at the top are the Toyota original hose. The smaller diameter pushes onto PCV valve. The larger onto spigot on intake manifold.

    I think somewhere up the page I bemoaned having to take the engine underpanel off to access the coolant drain spigot on the radiator. I noticed today, there are in fact openings in the panel, purpose designed for access. I was under there putting some rubber washers at each bolt interface, then reinstalled hand-tight only and added an extra locknut on each, torque the second nut against the first.

    Afterwards I noted the creaking I'd been hearing when jacking up the front, was gone. It was apparently due to that solidly torqued bracket, on the front beam, flexing as you raise the front.

    Just wondering bout hot gases temperature. You used toyota . dan bought pipes from home depo. What are the chances that these hoses gets overheated? Do we have an overheating of pipes issue here?
