Thanks to this forum within 15 min with a wrench I have found out why I have severe knock, and multiple misfire codes. Look at that gunk in the EGR pipe....guess I'm spending the next few hours pulling the whole EGR system and cleaning.

By the way, how the hell is this not under recall. Seems like a failed system, and every Prius seems to encounter this crap.

Its just carbon buildup, and might not necessarily be on the recalled list

If Toyota does not consider it a failure, then it should be listed in the maintenance schedule.

You mean like the brake flush and Trans fluid change they don't list either? I'm still waiting for someone to come up with an EGR Delete Mod (including the software delete) like with Diesels.

my guess is that will be temp resolution. I had a knocking engine few months back and EGR was the first thing that was a cleaned. I had a misfire on cyl 1&2 coused by coolant leak at 175k ml. and after EGR spark plugs repl. and ignition coil. At the end I just replaced the engine with a 40k ml. one.

Kinda, but failure to perform those doesn't seem as consistently fatal. They're incidentally a lot easier.

Consistently Fatal? Have not hear of one Prius that died because of a clogged EGR system.

    How'd it go Jamon?

Too cold to rip out and asking here.

I never buy new cars. After buying a used car, I like to at least twice, while entering hwy traffic. I press the accelerator to the floor and all but red line it.

Perhaps in the mistaken notion that it helps blow out carbon build up.

Doubt it's as productive with high-tech engines as it was with older styles. Really, unscientificly seems quicker and peppier.

If it supposedly causes knocking and high temperatures that knock out the head gasket, and fixing that costs more than replacing the engine, then the clogging was economically fatal to the engine. Maybe not to the car, depending on its value.

There's a reason why "Fix it before it breaks" is in my signature. :)

Did cleaning the pipe and valve fix your startup knock?
