2005 Prius - won't start. Due to cool weather conditions?

    I just payed $5000 to replace the hybrid battery and also just replaced the 12v battery as well. The car won't unlock with the key fob (which is charged) and after I manually unlock the car, the dash board is completely black and no lights come on. The car won't start when I put the key fob into the slot. Not sure what is going on and growing more frustrated by the day. Help!

    Empty 12V battery? Check the 12V battery voltage. If 12V battery is empty you need to charge or replace it. You can also just jump start it. But you need to keep the Prius in ready for at least 4 hours to charge the 12V battery.

    You can jump start the Prius from under the hood jump point. Keep the other vehicle turned OFF when jumping Prius and make sure that you connect the cables correctly.

    Yeah, this sounds like a classic dead 12v issue. Did you somehow accidentally leave the power on or a door ajar or dome light on overnight?

    You don’t necessarily need a vehicle to jump start if have a battery charger. You can simply connect the charger to the jump start points and let it do its thing for an hour. After that you should be able to power up the car and let the inverter do the rest.

    Also how recent is recent? Yesterday or a month ago? Have you been driving the car without issue since replacement up to this point?

    Sounds like a dead 12v.
    BTW: If you paid $5000 for just an HV battery, you got ripped off. That should have been around $3500.

    I only got $3,000 trade in on my 2008 Prius and there wasn't anything wrong with it. Sounds like you should have bought another car. JMHO

    Dealer trade-in's are always bad deals. I would have given you more for your car, just sayin'...

    It was 4990$ for the replacement Hybrid Battery and two computer components.

    I just had the Synergy system replaced because it was no longer charging both the hybrid battery and the 12V. But as of two days later (aka today) the dash board lights don't come on when I start the car and the check engine light comes on for a moment at start up. When I put the car in park and was trying to turn it off, it would not cut off and wouldn't loosen the key hold. . Any ideas for what on earth this could be now?!

    could be a bad multi info display. gas gauge/speedo/etc. try holding the start button for 4 or 5 seconds.

    I have had to do that to get my key out... but that is not normal. I didn't used to do that, but I am finding I am having to do that more often now. I wonder if my 12V needs to be charged or replaced (just replaced it in Dec.)

    I haven't checked it since I got the car back because everything had been working great. It was in the shop for 2.5 weeks. I just got it back on Tuesday. But I can certainly check it in the morning tomorrow. If it is a good charge, any ideas on what the problem could be?

    You have a failed combination meter (CM). You also have the model of Gen 2 where the combination meter will stop at 299,999 mi.

    See the link in my signature entitled "Combination Meters that stop at 299,999 miles, who's affected and what you can do about it."

    If you choose to let the dealer do the job it will cost you $800 - $1000. If you elect to go the DIY route, it will cost you ~$150. If you can't DIY, get a replacement unit from Matt @Texas Hybrid Batteries and find a local garage to swap it for you. Talk to Matt about your options.

    Another thing is that the steering wheel controls are the only way I can control my heat/AC and radio. The LCD display reads "The external system is not connected". I read on another forum to check all of the cables that are plugged into the Nav system under the drivers seat and they are all intact and plugged in.

    Yes, another symptom that confirms your CM is bad.

    Woah! Thank you so much! I am a DIY kinda gal so I don't mind trying my hand at it. My car is only at 157000. Is this normal?

    Sadly, it is a common problem, but not too difficult to DIY.

    Further to my previous post, if you let the dealer fix the CM, you will get a new CM that still stops at 299,999 mi.

    You probably don't drive it enough to put a good change on it. That and you not locking the door with the FOB every time you get out especially in the garage. It will alert you to door ajar. Its a very small battery and will not tolerate the insults you can throw at a big battery like letting it go dead repeatedly. Usually a couple of good deads on the little AGM and its done it will never hold a proper charge again.

    Become involved. Get a volt meter. See what the battery voltage is like in different situations like whats it look like in the am before I start the car. Or put the headlights on without starting the car and see what the standing charge it has...its ability to produce proper voltage under load. Thats the one that doesn't lie and its a free test.

    I've never had a 12 volt battery in my car strand me because I know its a big liability and it will not let it get me. Only takes a few minutes to check it.

    Thanks for the feedback. I do drive over 4 hours each day though... but we recently had several VERY cold snaps here in Georgia and so I think it zapped the battery... I don't mind going back to the auto shop I bought it at and having them charge it or having them swap me a new one. It is only a month old.

    I see. So much better idea to do it all myself. Especially because we will be installing the same part.
