I have a 2010 prius. Recently I cleaned the intake manifold and egr valve. When I changed to oil the other day I noticed oil leaking and collected below the oil filter. After changing the oil I noticed oil leaking what , from the oil filter cover. I tightened the filter cover and it slowed down the leak but was still leaking. I then removed the filter cover and reinstalled the O ring. Same results. I am wondering if it may be leak somewhere above the filter and just showing up down hill. Any help would be appreciated.

If you try this post how it works. Good luck.

You can get a version of this at any automotive parts store.

The o ring does not sit on the lowest position on the housing, it sits 1 position higher than the very last position.

    Hope that makes sense

Are you talking about, right below the treads?

Was it leaking oil prior to changing the oil?

How fast was it dripping after reinstalling the oring?

My guess is the gasket is improperly seated;).

    Keep us posted (y).

There’s a big groove for it too. But easily can be overridden:(.

Yes, I noticed there was a leak before I changed oil, but then it leaked more after I changed it. It is not a drip drip, but is a slow ooze. On the filter cover there is a large space after the threads. does the O ring fit right under the threads or at the bottom?

It fits in that space, not at the bottom. Here's a semi-explanatory picture from the Repair Manual. There's a better picture on the oil filter box, but I'd have to dig more to find:

Also, there's some component a little further up on the back wall that can leak oil, some sort of oil pressure sensor? There's been one or two instances of leaking from that, reported here.

Here's the image Mendel referenced from the filter box. If you can look under my lableing that this is for my 2013 Prius, you can see the left side is designated "OK" the right side is designated "NG" (no good)

Well, I went out this morning and changed the O ring to the correct position, but I still had a slow leak. It is very humbling to find out that after 9 years of doing something, you find out you have been doing it wrong. Like they say "live and learn". But it is not true that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks".

If any have any ideas where the leak could be coming from and what I have to take off to find it.

    Thanks

    Scitt

So oil filter O-ring was in wrong position?

Here's info on the Oil Pressure Sensor. They suggest to remove front/right wheel, access through wheel well.

Yes, the O ring was in the wrong place. I will check the Oil Pressure Sensor in the morning. Thanks

OK, I checked the oil sensor and what I saw was the actual sensor looked fairly clean, but where the wire plugged into it was covered with oil and dirt. The oil went up the wire and down an adjacent wire. Just my thoughts would be that if it were the oil sensor would it not be leaking from around the threads and would not run up a wire. I'm thinking something above is leaking and the oil is running down the cable. I looked around the area and could not find the culprit. Any thoughts?
