Which would be the peddle closest to the center console ;)

Removing the battery from the car and charging it with a 3~4 amp range smart charger, in your flat, would be the best approach to revive the battery. Still, in you scenario, having just bought the car, I think they owe you some help. The car likely sat unattended on their lot for donkey years.

    I understand.
Thank you for being patient with us as we brainstorm for ideas.

I did not know where the pedal is on the RHD car. That is why I did not say.

Ok, I tried jumping it with the jump kit this morning.

Attempt 1: Horn came on, scaring the shit out of us. Car would not start

Attempt 2: (5-7 minutes later, with the key inserted this time) Got the door alarm when I opened the driver's side door to press the on button - a good sign. Then when I pressed the on button it went green for a second or two and then again everything was off.

Attempt 3: (Again, 5-7 minutes later) Nothing happened - no door alarm, no green light.

I suppose what I'll have to do now is call the dealer and formally reject the car. Any thoughts?

One idea - maybe I'm not leaving it long enough after pressing the button on the jump kit and trying to start the car? I'm allowing about a minute. Perhaps I should allow longer? Jump kit needs a recharge now so can't try right away.

Starting should be possible as soon as jump starter is connected, no waiting period.

I got it working! Turns out that we were using the jump kit incorrectly - we needed to start immeadiately as you say.

I went to the petrol station (10 min trip) and filled up and it started again afterward. Then we decided to go on the daytrip (50 min trip) and left it for a few hours and again it started properly. My suspicion that this was a PEBKAC has increased somewhat. Will know more when I can get probes for the multimeter tomorrow.

There maybe an aspect of user error here in the use of the starter pack, but there is no doubt you have a 12 V battery that has seen better days. Your best bet is to get the agreement of the seller to part fund a replacement as you will need a new one sooner rather than later. It is best to get this sorted now, rather than let it become an ongoing nuisance that sours your Prius experience. I would recommend using a dealer to supply and fit a new 12 V battery as getting the right 3rd party battery in the UK is a mission. Are dealers still doing a fixed price of a new 12 V supplied and fitted for £110?
