Hello, I have never owned a Prius nor a used car. I am considering purchasing one soon as my 08' Nissan Sentra is no longer reliable and constantly in the shop. I can only spend up to $13,000 and am wondering a few things.

1.) Is it possible that a Prius costing $13,000 or LESS could be reliable enough to only need general maintenance (breaks, tires, oil change)? I would hate to take out a car payment and then have it in the shop all the time.

In general, I am searching for a car with this price tag that will be very reliable and hopefully low maintenance.

2.) If so, which Prius years/models should I look into purchasing? Mileage?

If this breaks any of the forum rules (not being a Prius owner) please let me know and I will take down.

    Thanks for your time,
    Jena

Like "how long is a piece of string", it's impossible to give a definitive answer whether it be a Mercedes or a Model T ... BUT ...

PRIUS has been one of the leaders in reliability, I'd assume that a $13,000 car should still have some of the manufacturer's warranty (depending on the number of kilometers travelled), and, depending on your state, the battery and associated hardware has an 8 or 10 year warranty. And with batteries, many have lasted the life of the vehicle.

Brakes too - are a verrrry slow wearing part on a PRIUS - many have gone the life of the vehicle. The vehicle does most of it's braking by way of regenerating the inertia of motion into electricity.

Gearboxes - almost never fail - as it really hasn't got one - the drive from the petrol engine and 2 electric motors is through a simple planetary gearset.

Engines are low stressed units, running an Atkinson cycle - initial start off the line is more often done by the electric motor, the petrol engine kicks in when needed - there is no starter motor or alternator, those functions are accommodated by the hybrid drivetrain and electrical system.

You can see my mileage below. Mine is 18mths old, a Gen 4, Australian base model.

A Gen 4 is 2016 and newer. There was a major change in the car both in appearance and underneath. Some 2016 are appearing on the used car market. A lower trim 2016 would not have the safety features that were standard starting in 2017. I am not sure if you visit our northern neighbor but some early 2016 could not be changed to show speed in kilometers per hour.

Thank you, yes I know I'm asking a lot. I basically have just heard that Prius's are different from other cars in that they "last forever" and are "low maintenance". I'm just looking for some validation, especially since I am nervous about buying used. I just generally would like to think that i'm not purchasing "someone else's headache" when I buy their Prius. Thank you for the detailed feedback. I definitely learned a lot from it!

Prius are generally reliable i well cared for as are many other Toyota vehicles. The Prius likes to be driven. I believe in your other thread you mentioned about 15K miles per year. I think that is toward the low end of what a Prius likes. I put about 13K on mine in the past year.
I do not know what space requirements you need for people & cargo. A Corolla is an excellent car. The fuel economy is not quite as high as the Prius but the price is generally much lower.
I chose the Prius because I felt I needed the extra cargo space to periodically transport our dogs. I have a 2008 Corolla still going strong, as is my 2000 Tundra pickup truck.
When buying used, it is always good to have a trusted friend or mechanic inspect it for possible problems. Toyota dealers can sell Toyota Certified used cars which have some additional warranty protection.
Here are a couple nearby I found at http://www.toyotacertified.com. The Trim 3 has a few more features than the trim two.

Thanks for the info. I will look into Corolla as well. I usually travel alone or with one passenger, no kids.

I like to camp so I saw the hatchback with the rear seats folding flat as a plus for gear. I'm intrigued by the idea of getting 50mpg. I would love a car to take little road trips in here and there so I could definitely arrange putting on some extra miles. ;)

Local journalists driving both in comparison (they drive harder than most of us) have got about 5l/100km from PRIUS, but more like 9+l/100km from Corolla - so PRIUS is going to save you $$. Oh, and PRIUS will give you longer trip range - I get about 1000km from a tank.

There have been several PRIUS camping threads - the most recent have been quite a few videos by @JimmiPri who has done some intriguing setting up his PRIUS for solo camping - here is one of his threads, there are others, search for them either in PriusChat:
