Chlorinated compounds were fantastic solvents, but had environmental and personal impacts:(.

Brakleen is now made in non-chlorinated form (use acetone as a base). But I used that on our egr cooler and it worked well;).

    Just not a potent(y).

Ha ha yes, that wonderful 12 mm nut that almost take two people to R&R, one with long socket and swivel, and one with a magnet to guide socket. I reinstalled that nut on my first cooler job, this last one, that nut is still in my magnetic tray lol.

After a good soak in super clean, or purple power, I plug end of cooler and spray PB blaster bolt loosening penetrating oil and fill cooler, that stuff melts the carbon to a runny goo. The piano wires a great idea, I used a large paper clip straitened out, finish with brake cleaner.

I never had an issue with that nut, however I do wonder if the right hand drive set up makes it slightly easier to access that nut?

Sorry to dig up old post but I took my 2010 apart do clean out TB and EGR cooler. I did get a spare EGR cooler from ebay and cleaned it out beforehand. The one I took out of my car was completely clogged and have been reading other post to try to clean it out to prep for next swap out.

Just a thought about that hidden bolt below the cooler. I have one of these rotator ratchet which can operates with miminal space.

ratchet action happens by just twisting the handle. one i was able to thread the bolt onto the stud, i was able to tighten the bolt down.

The hidden bolt is not hard to get to, just use a socket with a small extension.
