I have an '08 Prius with less than 130k miles on it-- the car is new to me as of last September. It is a touring package 5, which includes navigation and backup camera, all OEM.

My backup camera is no longer working. When I shift into reverse, there is a black, blank screen that does include the warning text to check my surroundings. Turning the car on and off (just once) did nothing. The rest of the center console display works as expected.

I took a cell phone video that shows that the black images is actually a very very dark, horizontally scrolling image of the camera view.

The camera failure happened to me at the end of a few drives that day It worked perfectly until I got home. The weather was in the 70s and sunny. I have never had any issues with the backup camera before.

Earlier that week, I drove on a dirt road that shook the the car and the dash more than I would have liked. My car gets parked in a horrible garage, and bottoms out at when entry. Perhaps some connection got loose somewhere? If this is the case, is this something I could easily check and fix myself? Where? How?

If not solved, I will have a mechanic look at it during the week. What repair costs can I expect?

start at the back and make sure the lens is clean and stable. then check the connections from there all the way under the car and behind the mfd. if everything looks solid, you'll have to test the camera and the mfd which is a more complicated procedure.

estimating repair cost is difficult not knowing what is wrong. i'd guess between $100. and $500.

Never seen anyone complain the back up camera went out. I searched using the search forums button up top.

Going to be tough fixing that one. Since your mfd screen works otherwise it probably is the camera itself.

If it was me I would go to a junkyard and pull one out of a g2 and replace yours, go to toyotechinfo.com and buy a one day subscription to the service manual and print out how to remove the camera,
It’s pretty easy take cover off the back of the hatch and take a look.

Camera replacement is very easy. But I would suspect it's more of a connection issue. I would check the wiring first.

If you do need a camera, I think I have an extra one, just send me a message when you need it

Op states says sees a very dark horizontally scrolling pic. That’s not wiring and that’s not dirty lens.
    But JC says it’s easy.

    Never replaced one myself.

Yes easy, remove the rear hatch trim. Remove the 4 nuts holding the rear garnish for the trunk release. Camera is right there. Maybe 10 minute job

I have an '06 Prius that suddenly developed a black fuzzy screen when put in reverse. Are replacement instructions same for '06 and '08? Any recommendations on where to get replacement camera?

    Thanks

In advance of getting a replacement camera I removed the plastic covering on inside lower hatch which popped off easily. I see where the camera cord connects via a clip to the wiring bundle. The camera looks very hard to access under the outer metal layer of the hatch frame. There appears to be 6 small allen wrench type screws but I can't see how to get at these. I forgot to snap a picture. Any advice on how to proceed. I was really hoping to do this myself.

    Thanks
