I like it better when folks disagree with me and show how I'm wrong. That happens aplenty, but until we get a 'dislike' button installed, it will be subtle and not countable.

Telling jokes of any form or complexity should be an end in itself. Relying upon audience responses assumes (maybe too much) about their interest. Assuming about their comprehension tends towards trolling.

Perhaps I misuse PriusChat in many ways. Why should this be a place to learn odd things, and why should any no-longer-Prius-driver be given voice? To me it comes down to leaders' decisions here. Unusual among car-chat sites, here we can wander widely. The best wanderings have not been mine but I try to keep up.

It is enjoyable. Earlier we had more climate-change deconstructionists but they have wandered off and I miss them. Tens and more still post on things way out there. More (and more from them) would be better I say.

Because this became, somehow, not just another car-chat site but a people-interaction site. If it is not unique, please tell of others! Maybe I can waste even more internet time...

While yes the headrests in USDM vehicles are larger than their JDM/EUDM counterparts, I was referring to a Japanese or German designed USDM vehicle has much smaller headrests than a US designed USDM vehicle.

Or the worst offender I have had to drive as a rental, a Jeep Cherokee that wanted to flip upside down everytime I took a corner. The headrests blocked most of the rear window

 

How come it's EPA estimated miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe.) is 84 MPGe, but EPA estimated MPG is 18 city/28 hwy which is same as gasser version of Pacifica. Once it runs out of EV range, does it run as hybrid?

Edit: Never mind. I was looking at wrong spec on Pacifica website. It only shows 84 MPGe for Hybrid.

The only plug in FCA had before this minivan was the California only Fiat 500e. It has taken Tesla nearly 5 years to use up their credits. I wouldn't worry about the credit going away for a Pacifica at this time.

Reliability worries me too, but today's worse cars are still much better than those of the past.

As I said, I think the US makes use US headrests in Canada simply because it is cheaper for them to do so. European spec headrests might be made in Europe vs North America for US spec ones

In the case of a Prius, it is a Japanese import. So lower costs for locally produced parts aren't a factor, and I bet the smaller headrests are a little bit cheaper, along with likely being preferred over the big ones.

The hybrid mode is 32mpg combined.



2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

 

I pulled them off the seat in the Sonic; rarely had rear passengers, and they got in the way of folding the seat down. Importing the UK headrests was tempting.
The Camry's are fixed, but aren't in the way of sight. The middle one isn't symmetrical though; the slope of one side is not as steep as the other.

I brought up the regulation because complying to one is different than being an in house decision. As for its existence, we likely have scientific proof supporting it reducing injuries, and the insurance, possibly healthcare lobby pushed for it. As for better headlight technology, the IIHS only recently started testing the ones we have now. Then new tech always has a higher price tag, and I suspect the car companies and public don't care much one way or the other.

On another note, I've noticed the steering wheel not being centered with the seat, but only because it has been pointed out here.

 

why do you think that is?

 

My garage will never ever see another Chrysler product. Plus Fiat is getting ready to flush the bowl on that pos, And rightly so.

 

Our Review
As a new owner, the takeaway from many of the prior posts - here & the other thread goes like this;
~ Minivan? too icky, not for those over 40.
BUT - After kids, maybe mid 50's & beyond comes grankids - 4 of 'em so far. That means a 7 seater really works.
~ Expensive
BUT - with end-of-year discounts? fed & state money, & a $1,000 in' conquest money (ie, $16K off sticker)? .... out the door for $37K? How else can you get lane assist, blind spot lane change warning, adaptive cruise control, self park, crazy 360° camera view .....

OTA updates, AC/heated ventilated 7way lumbar support seating, 32mpg in CS mode, 33 ev miles, seat up to 7, or room to EASILY sleep 2 big adults - camper style? (VERY impressed w/outside heat/cold rejection) - Remote start, pre-cool / preheat (including steering wheel) nice long CARB, warranty besides all of the usual warranty goodies.
~ i'd NEVER buy U.S. - & Chrysler SUCKS
Some will say. Others seem to have had good luck over the years. It's going into its 3rd year of production, & no fleetwide complaints as of yet. Oh - & a lot of the manufacturing/assembly is Canadian, so - that's just a correction.

SO - with only 600 miles on it so far, here's the new Beast ... we looked 1st at used stuff, but with all the discounts, we figured it's going to be close to the same price, only with maybe 8 or 10K Miles already on it, if we'd bought used.






Eventually there will be a long-term mileage report, but for now, we've used less than a ¼ tank of gas, averaging 70 MPG. That number will obviously go up or down turning on individual use / long / short trips.
We note the ice will not necessarily turn on, during Frosty mornings, but sometimes it will. It will also turn on if your hitting the throttle pedal pretty hard, but it doesn't require all the way down "flooring it" to activate the ice, maybe ¾ of the way, asking it to provide more than 120hp/90kW's from the ICE. After we let up on the pedal, it will still run for maybe ¾ of a minute. "she-who-must-be-obeyed" is very picky with her rides - but finds the minivan comfy, easy to enter / exit, & see out of. So much so, that she prefers driving it, over the loaner S - (too low to the ground for her) while her model X is in the shop to have its big ol' screen replaced. It developed a faint yellow ½" boarder all the way around the edge .... no big deal, but Heck, if you're going to drive 100's of miles over the long holiday weekend, when better to complain about the nit picks, to conveniently stick it in the shop.

Lastly (for now) it truly does easily get ~ 32mpg from the short trip range display, & it's pretty easy to do much better around town. Also, driving around after it's EV empty, so far, we've noted it will recapture between 4 & 5 EV miles & then start using EV again, before it goes back to CS mode.

I'm not what you would call a Dodge fan, but the Pacifica is a pretty impressive piece of kit for 37-large....and while the non-domesticated US brand definitely has it's detractors in the auto-snob community, they do have good street cred in the minivan community.

The reported mileage seems TREMENDOUS....much more so since I read some specs on that puppy.

"Beast" is an apt name.
That thing is nearly as big as a Tahoe...and it will get up off it's fat a** in a relative hurry if you squish the right pedal.
It has 7 seat-belts and seems to be able to accommodate 4 child car seats - and more importantly - 4 grand-babies worth of support cargo (diaper bags, strollers, toys, and headache analgesics...etc)

Perhaps the 2 most impressive features are the sub-stratospheric pricing and adult styling.
If you didn't notice the charging door and the 1 extra "me-too!" badge, you could be excused for not noticing that it's a hybrid....and from what I'm reading you could put a norm in the driving seat, and they might not notice it's a hybrid either!

Methinks (or mehopes) that the tinkerers in Mopar's bunny-hugging division might have plans to propagate this drive train into some of their other platforms, and they're starting out with one segment that they're the undefeated champ in - which is minivans.
